Busy week

Fandy.com Staff • Aug 27, 2014 at 3:15 PM

It will be a busy week for area teams as the spring sports tournaments progress — and the rainy weather subsides.

In baseball, it has the potential to be a very busy week for state-ranked Perkins. The Pirates are scheduled to host Norwalk today in a Division II sectional championship game at 4:30 p.m. at Perkins High School. It is a rematch of a 6-4 Norwalk win on April 5.

On Tuesday, the Pirates are scheduled to finish off two games with Oak Harbor to wrap up the Sandusky Bay Conference championship. Perkins is leading Oak Harbor 5-1 in the top of the fourth inning of a game that was suspended last Monday. The two teams will finish that game beginning at 4 p.m., then play a full regularly scheduled game after.

Perkins is scheduled to host St. Mary Central Catholic at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday to conclude the SBC portion of the schedule, but that is only if the Panthers aren’t still playing in the tournament as well.

SMCC is scheduled to host Ottawa Hills at 5 p.m. today in a sectional championship, and will have a quick turnaround Wednesday against Cardinal Stritch at 2 p.m. at Clyde — if they win today.

The Div. IV tournament games have been postponed since Wednesday, while Norwalk and Perkins have tried to get their matchup in since Thursday.

On Thursday, five area baseball teams will be in district tournament action.

At the Div. II Mansfield Madison site, the Norwalk-Perkins winner will face Lexington at 2 p.m., followed by a Clyde-Ontario matchup at 4:30 p.m.

In Div. III, Edison will face Bucyrus Wynford at 2 p.m. Thursday at Heidelberg University, and that game will be followed by a double-area pairing of New London vs. Huron at 4 p.m. The Tigers won the regular season matchup between the two, 8-6.

If SMCC advances through the next two rounds, they will be back in the district championship game at Clyde at 5 p.m. Friday. The winners of the Div. II Mansfield Madison and Div. III Heidelberg sites return in championship games at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Nine area teams in tournament action this week

Half the area’s softball teams are still playing in the tournament this week, including today when Margaretta visits New London in a Div. III sectional championship game at 5 p.m.    It was a game that was also postponed multiple times last week, and the winner of today’s game will face Mohawk in a district semifinal at Clyde High School at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Edison faces Clear Fork in a rematch of a 2011 district championship game won by the Colts. Clear Fork reached state in 2011, while Edison followed in 2012, then fell in extra innings of a regional semifinal last season. Tuesday’s game is at 5 p.m. at Buckeye Central.

In the other half of Edison’s bracket is Clyde facing Lexington, which will be played at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The district championship is slated for 5 p.m. Friday back at Buckeye Central.

Also on Tuesday, Oak Harbor faces Bucyrus Wynford in a Div. III district semifinal, also at Clyde at 5 p.m. In

Div. IV, St. Mary Central Catholic faces Lakota at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal at Fremont Ross.

If Oak Harbor advances, they face the winner of the New London-Margaretta-Mohawk half of the bracket at 5 p.m. Friday back at Clyde. Should the Panthers advance, they would be in the championship game at 5 p.m. Friday at Fremont against the Fremont St. Joseph-Tiffin Calvert winner.

Despite being just two miles apart, Perkins and Sandusky will also rematch in softball, but go clear to the west side of Ottawa County to do it in a Div. II district semifinal at 5 p.m. at Genoa. The winner of that game will come back at noon Saturday to face the Eastwood-Maumee winner in the championship game.

Four singles players; five doubles teams in district action

At the Div. II Bowling Green State University district on Wednesday, area players will attempt a top-four finish to reach the state championships.

In singles competition, Perkins’ Manickam Manickam, Huron’s Jake Guerrero, Perkins’ Josh Rohrbacher and Clyde’s Alex Medley all advanced by finishing in the top four at the sectional tournament over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the doubles’ teams of SMCC’s Taylor Crooks and Carlo Mormina, Port Clinton’s Noah Cross and Jeff Griffin, Huron’s Deryk Wray and Jake Lehrer, Perkins’ Cody Dominick and Yu Hang Chen and Bellevue’s Drew Ring and Matt Poock will all be in action.

The top four singles and four doubles team winners reach the state tournament at The Ohio State University varsity outdoor courts on May 30-31.

District meets on tap this week

The area track and field participants begin their quest to reach the state championships — slated for June 6-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus — by competing in district action this week.

On Tuesday, the Div. II Oak Harbor district will host just girls competition, as Bellevue, Clyde, Edison, Huron, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Western Reserve and Willard begin at 4 p.m.

On Wednesday at Oak Harbor will be the boys teams of Bellevue, Clyde, Edison, Huron, Margaretta, Oak Harbor, Perkins, Port Clinton and Willard. At Tiffin Columbian Wednesday will be the Div. I meet that will have the boys and girls teams from Norwalk and Sandusky, along with the Perkins girls.

At Fremont Ross Wednesday in Div. III will be the girls teams from Margaretta and SMCC.

On Thursday, Fremont Ross will host the Danbury and SMCC boys, while the Div. III site at Bucyrus includes both the boys and girls teams from Monroeville, New London, St. Paul, and the Western Reserve boys.

The finals of the district meets are Friday and Saturday, with the Div. I Columbian and Div. II Oak Harbor sites beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Saturday will be the finals for both

Div. III sites at Fremont (11 a.m.) and Bucyrus (11:30 a.m.).
