Car dealer raises $59K for election

Bill Reineke Jr., a car dealer seeking to be elected to the Ohio House, is ready to run a Cadillac campaign.

Reineke announced Thursday he’s already raised $59,100 for his campaign, from 115 donors.

“I am humbled by the support I have received from people across the state. It is evident that our message of economic development and strong leadership is resonating with voters across the district,” Reineke said in a statement.

Reineke faces two other Republican write-in candidates, Rhonda Damschroder and Richard Geyer, in the May 6 primary race for Ohio District 88, which includes Sandusky County and much of Seneca County. They are vying to run against William “Bill” Young, the Democratic write-in candidate.

Reineke wasn’t available for questions Thursday, but his campaign manager, Jefferson Thomas, said Reineke’s top issues are growing the economy, expanding vocational-technical education and improving Ohio 53 to give Sandusky County the four-lane highway it needs to grow.

The Reineke family owns eight dealerships in northwest Ohio.

All the candidates filed write-in campaigns after state Rep. Rex Damschroder, R-Fremont, withdrew after discovering he had made a mistake when he filed for office.

Instead his wife, retired schoolteacher Rhonda Damschroder, filed for the office. She plans to quit the race if she wins the primary so Republican officials can appoint her husband as the Republican nominee for the general election.

Campaign finance reports show Rex Damschroder raised less money for his races.

His July 2012 report in his last campaign showed a balance forward of $4,997.32, contributions of $1,440, expenditures of $3,500 and a balance on hand of $2,937.32.

“I try not to raise any more than I need” Damschroder said.

He said he is not asking for any contributions for his wife’s race because he doesn’t want to ask supporters to have to pay to correct his filing mistake.

Geyer could not be reached for comment Thursday.
