Boys in cancer scam charged as juveniles

Associated Press • Apr 4, 2014 at 3:30 PM

Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson told The Courier in Findlay that investigators are still trying to determine how much money the teens collected through the alleged scam.

Police said the two Elmwood students visited homes in Hancock and Wood counties, asking for donations for a cancer-stricken student or teacher from their district. Authorities said there was no such person.

Dobson alleged a 17-year-old student came up with the scheme and got help from a 14-year-old student. Elmwood Superintendent Tony Borton said it wasn’t a sanctioned solicitation effort.

Borton said information will be provided to verify the authenticity of future school fundraisers.
