50 years ago, 1964: Iceboat racing was held on Sandusky Bay with over 25 DN Class boats scheduled to be on hand. The seventh annual Farrell-Cheek Trophy race would be held on a two-mile course between Battery Park Marina and Cedar Point Marina.
25 years ago, 1989: The U.S. population was expected to grow more slowly than ever in the next 50 years, the Census Bureau said, reaching a total of 302 million people in 2038, a 56 million, or 25 percent increase over the current population.
10 years ago, 2004: The wreckage of a plane which crashed into Lake Erie shortly after takeoff from Pelee Island was raised from the bottom of the lake. The bodies of the 10 victims were still in the Cessna 208 Caravan when it was hoisted aboard the Canadian Coast Guard cutter Samuel Risley.
