25 years ago, 1989: The Great Lakes shipping industry finished it busiest season since 1981. Shipments of iron ore, coal and stone totaled 144.5 million tons, up 9 percent from 1987 and up 26 percent from 1986.
10 years ago, 2004: Democratic presidential rivals blitzed Iowa on the final weekend of a close and costly caucus campaign. Howard Dean, Dick Gephardt, John Edwards and John Kerry were all pushing campaigns to the limits in the last minutes prior to the Iowa caucus.
