A man's Toyota MR2 Spyder was destroyed after it caught fire while he was driving on Ohio 2 in Erie County early Thursday morning.
Roger Herschelman, of Lorain County, said he was driving east on Ohio 2 when he noticed smoke in his rearview mirror. He pulled over at the Berlin Road off ramp and his vehicle was soon engulfed in flames. He escaped unharmed.
At about 12:30 a.m., as Herschelman waited for firefighters to arrive, he stood at the roadside with a few motorists who had stopped to check on him. The small group stood a fair distance from the burning vehicle, given the occasional small explosion.
As a column of black smoke rose above the highway, Herschelman seemed to take the incident in stride. He remarked to a bystander, "I wish I had remembered to get my CDs out of there."
Toyota stopped manufacturing the Spyder for the U.S. market about nine years ago, phasing the line out completely in 2007. Prices vary on used models, but a quick Internet search shows a decent used MR2 Spyder runs about $10,000 to $12,000.
