Judy Wheeler is a cook in the kitchen at Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community at 9400 N. Shore Blvd. in Marblehead.

She’s also part of an award-winning organization.

When the Ottawa County Health Department handed out its Awards of Merit to local organizations that maintain high standards for cleanliness and safety, Otterbein won in the full menu food service operation category.

Wheeler was one of two Otterbein workers who accepted the award.

“We were ecstatic,” Wheeler said. “We follow the rules to the maximum. We take pride in our work. We always have a clean kitchen.”

Ottawa County has been handing out the awards since 1983, county health commissioner Nancy Osborn said. “Our intention is to recognize those licensees in Ottawa County that have maintained this last licensing year a high degree of sanitation and safety,” Osborn said.

The department hopes the awards offer an incentive to do well.

The other award winners:

• Food Service Operation, Limited Menu: Chippewa Golf Course, 23550 Ohio 579, Curtice.

• Swimming Pool: Fairway Villas at CIC Homeowners Association, 2675 Canterbury Circle, Port Clinton.

• Large Campground: East Harbor State Park, 1169 N. Buck Road, Marblehead.

• Small Campground: Dani-Donn’s Bayside Resort Inc., 7420 E. Bayshore Road, Marblehead.
