A howling good time

They didn’t sprout any hair or claws, but they may have set a world record.

More than 478 people participated in Saturday’s local leg of Great Wolf Lodge’s resort-wide attempt at setting a curious world record: The most people howling all at once.

At all 10 Great Wolf resorts combined, about 4,200 people participated.

“We are submitting all of the paperwork and witness statements,” said Chelsey Brooks, spokeswoman for Great Wolf Lodge. “It can take up to three months to be certified as having beaten the record.”

The “old” record was set about two months ago, when 296 students in St. Cloud, Minn., gathered at a mall for what they called the “Husky Howl.” The students were from St. Cloud State University, where the school mascot is the Husky.

The record was certified by the World Record Academy, which touts itself as the “leading organization which certifies world records,” according to academy’s website.

Great Wolf officials said they researched their idea with Guinness World Records.

At about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, guests at all Great Wolf resorts — from Washington to Kansas to Ohio and beyond — howled for about one minute straight. They were joined by Wiley the Wolf, one of the recognizable Great Wolf Lodge characters.

“This is the first time we hosted the event,” Brooks said. “We wanted to do something fun for Howl-O-Ween and take full advantage of the full moon being on a Saturday night. Our guests howl in the resorts every day, so this seemed like a fun thing to engage our guests.”

The event was one of many Halloween activities the lodge has lined up for October.
