A Huron County grand jury indicted Christopher Barber, 18, on a charge of aggravated arson this week, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The fire started June 25 when Barber was visiting a friend at a four-unit apartment building, Willard police Detective Jeremy Draper said. No one was injured and only the single unit was damaged, but Willard police called the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office to help investigate.

“We questioned the ones that were in the apartment when the fire started,” Draper said. “From how it started, it had to be started by someone who was there.”

Barber admitted to starting the fire — he said he used a lighter to catch a bed on fire, but he didn’t say why he did it, Draper said.

Shelby police arrested him on a warrant Aug. 7, and he was indicted last week. He posted $100,000 bond Monday and was released from the Huron County jail.
