50 years ago, 1963: People were flocking to a farm near Alice, Texas, where a housewife saw a vision of the Virgin Mary on an old water tank. Officials estimated 19,000 people visited the farm since the vision was reported in April. Some visitors claimed they could see the image, others thought it was a flaw in the wood.
25 years ago, 1988: Johnson County, Iowa, authorities charged a University of Iowa student with cruelty to animals for parachuting his pet gerbil from an 11th floor campus dormitory. The student tied a small parachute to the gerbil and dropped it from the balcony several times before it got stuck in a tree. The gerbil had to be rescued by officials using a cherry picker. The gerbil was not injured.
10 years ago, 2003: Megan Kirby and Daniel Albert received Sandusky High School's top senior scholar-athlete awards at the schools's 24th annual awards program. Albert received the Malinovsky Award, given to a senior boy each year. Kirby received the Girl's Achievement Award to honor a senior girl each year.
