A tire blew on a handicap van headed east on Ohio 2 late Tuesday morning, causing the vehicle to swerve and flip.
A handful of passengers were stuck inside the van after it flipped, although none appeared to suffer life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Huron firefighters had to extricate the passengers from the vehicle, as they were still belted into their seats and were hanging upside down. Once removed from the flipped van, they were taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The crash happened at 11:11 a.m. in the easttbound lanes of Ohio 2, near the Rye Beach Road exit. The van was traveling from the Toledo area.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash. Also responding to the scene were Erie County deputies, Huron police, as well as U.S. Border Patrol and Huron and Perkins firefighters. State transportation workers also assisted in traffic control.
