Deputies find heroin in Erie County jail

The suspected owner of the drugs, Terry Lane, 32, of Maple Heights, was arrested by Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers two days earlier on charges of operating vehicle intoxicated and possession of oxycodone, Erie County chief deputy Jared Oliver said.

On Thursday deputies got a tip from another inmate that Lane had drugs on him. They locked down the jail and called for the Perkins police dog, but before the dog arrived deputies discovered a plastic bag tied in a sheet, stuffed under a bunk.

Inside were two chunks of suspected heroin totaling about one gram in weight, Oliver said.

When deputies confronted Lane with the find, he allegedly admitted it was his. He also said he’d ingested some of the heroin and needed to go to the hospital, Oliver said.

Paramedics rushed Lane to Firelands Regional Medical Center.

Oliver said charges are pending, and the case will likely be presented to an Erie County grand jury.
