Roy D. Cox, 31, needed the Jaws-of-Life to remove him and his passenger — Port Clinton resident Casey M. Wadsworth, 29 — after crashing.

The incident occurred at 4:25 a.m. while Cox was driving west on State Road. He failed to negotiate a right curve and traveled off the south side of State Road. The vehicle rotated clockwise and eventually stopped when it crashed into the iron pole.

Both Cox and Wadsworth were not wearing seat belts and troopers believed alcohol played a factor in the crash, according to a related Ohio State Highway Patrol report.

Cox was taken to Port Clinton's Magruder Hospital and later transported to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo so doctors there could treat his critical injuries.

Wadsworth sustained minor injuries and was taken to Magruder Hospital as well.

The crash remains under investigation.

Among the agencies responding to the scene: Port Clinton fire, Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and North Central EMS.
