Sandusky aims to recoup ambulance fees

Officials typically charge people or their insurance companies $300 when firefighters drive someone to Firelands Regional Medical Center.
The fire department also charges $6 for each mile driven to Firelands.
For various reasons, people sometimes fail to pay emergency medical services transportation bills after city ambulances zip them to the hospital.
“Some of the debt is unrecoverable,” Sandusky fire Chief Paul Ricci said. “Maybe the patient has died, they no longer have insurance or maybe they don’t have the means. But that is still a sizable amount of money that needs to be collected.”
City commissioners recently approved a contract with the George Street-based State Collection and Recovery Services office.
