Transit rides will be free today to promote public transportation during a nationwide campaign to save money during high gas prices.
Demand for the Sandusky Perkins Area Ride Connection has increased 30 percent from this time last year, said Tom Schwan, administrator for the Sandusky Transit System.
Dump the Pump Day aims to promote the two, one-hour bus routes that run throughout Sandusky, Perkins Township and Huron.
Ridership numbers have hit record highs each month this year, Schwan said, with about 7,400 rides in May and 29,900 for the first five months of 2011.
The Sandusky City Commission declared today Dump the Pump Day.
