Castalia woman dead in Townsend Township crash

2010
A Castalia woman died Saturday evening in a two-car crash that injured four other people on Ohio 412 in Townsend Township.
Vicky Brummitt, 61, of 6104 Parker Road, Castalia, was riding in the back seat of a Ford Expedition that was eastbound on Ohio 412 near Sandusky County Road 268 at about 6 p.m.
Troopers from the Fremont post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the expedition was struck by a 1999 Ford Contour that was northbound on County Road 268. The Contour, driven by a 17-year-old Castalia boy, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the Expedition.
The crash forced the Expedition off the northeast corner of the intersection and into a soybean field, where it overturned several times, troopers said. The Contour went off the south side of Ohio 412 and came to rest in a field.
Brummitt was taken by Life Squad EMS to Physicians Choice Hospital, troopers said.
The teen driver of the Contour, was taken by Life Squad EMS to The Bellevue Hospital. A hospital spokesperson said he was not listed as being at the hospital late Saturday.
The driver of the Expedition, Bobby J. Brummitt, 70, 5609 Deyo Road, Castalia, and another rear-seat passenger, Willard E. Brummitt, 64, of 6104 Parker Road, Castalia, were flown from the scene to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. The front-seat passenger, Fay Brummitt, 70, of 5609 Deyo Road, Castalia, was first taken by Life Squad to Physicans Choice Hospital before being flown to St. Vincent.
A spokesperson for St. Vincent said Bobby Brummitt was admitted in fair condition late Saturday, and Willard Brummitt and Fay Brummit were each admitted in serious condition.
All the people involved except for Vicky Brummitt were wearing seatbelts, troopers said.
No charges had been filed as of 10 p.m. Saturday, troopers said. The crash remains under investigation and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, troopers said.

Suspected, assumed, or proven? The only people who may know new facts, which have not been made known to all parties involved, is the Brummitts or their families. The boy's parents have not been told any differently and have no reason not to believe him. Here we go again. I hope AND PRAY there aren't more rumors being spread. Does NO good. I am still praying. All will accomplish more that way.

I agree very much that this whole thing seems more than just an accident.I check the articles everyday in hopes that we hear more about this horrible thing and it has been more than a week and i haven't gotten any updates. What i dont understand is why us"civilians" see that this was an act of carelessness and wrecklessness and the "professionals" have yet to determine that.does anyone have any answers because i really just cannot make since of it as of right now

I just want to say that yes accidents happen we all realize that! But the fact remains WHY was this kid going through a stop sign it is plain as day he was not planning on stopping!!!!! His friend says he was not "flying" whatever. And someone else says that he said the sun was in his eyes I didn't realize that the sun set to the north I always thought it set in the west!!!!! Yes accidents can happen to anyone but that is why you have to pay attention while you are driving! It could happen to anyone and I realize that but come on to many people don't pay attention anymore! And now a family has lost a great person who loved her family more than anything in this world.

i want to start off by saying how horrible i feel for EVERYONE that is involved in this horrible accident.I am praying for the Brummit family everyday. As for the young man who was responsible i could never imagine the guilt he must feel, but unfortunatley:accident or not he is responsible for this horrible event.Nobody will really know the truth of what happened that evening untill the investigations by the state highway patrol are finished. There are many differint things that everybody is assuming could have happened, but only that seventeen year old boy really knows. My opinion is that KIDS should not be able to drive untill they graduate from highschool and untill the law changes then the PARENTS are responsible for making sure thier son or daughter is responsible enoughe to take on the privelage of driving.Driving in America is not a right it is a privelage and thats what everybody needs to remember.I dont know what really was going on in that car that night...whether he was playing with his phone, high on drugs or just listening to the music and being careless someones wife,mother,grandmother,sister,etc...was killed. An accident is an accident, but the real question that needs to be asked is "could this one have been prevented?"My answer is PROBABLY COULD HAVE.and im not talking about that stupid "seatbelt theory" that everyone keeps yelling about.Im talking about a little more responsibility on young kids who drive(how they drive)and thier family members who are supossed to make sure they are driving and acting in such a way where they have earned the privelage to drive.Maybe if this was happening in this particular circumstance then a woman would have never died and a highschool student wouldn't have to live with this on his concience for the rest of his life.I think everyone involved is going to have a long painful road ahead of them out of something that really could have been prevented.I hope this is a lesson to every young driver and everyone who is a parent of a young driver.

This is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the Brummitt family. Cheri, I can't imagine the pain you and your family are going through. @ Kimber- Yes, this was a terrible accident. I'm sure the boy didn't mean to hurt anyone, but the fact of the matter is he did. A wonderful woman was killed, and 3 others were seriously injured. You shouldn't be so quick to defend your friend so flippantly. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt , and friend was killed in this accident. He took a life and will be punished according to the law. I'm sure he feels terrible, but let's remember the woman, Vicky, who lost her life and her family who is struggling to heal both physically and emotionally from this accident. I think prayers are what are needed. I can only hope that there were no drugs or alcohol involved in this accident, because that would be a true tragedy, to have a wonderful person die due to someone's poor judgement.

I am the daughter of Vicky Brummitt and I would like to reply to several of the rude and nasty comments. First of all my mother was the sweetest, kind person in the entire world and anyone who knew her would tell you that. My father is doing much better (still in St. V hospital) but has a very long road ahead. Faye and Bob are doing better as well. They have both been sent to a rehab center.
To clarify the whole seat belt thing. My mother always wore her seat belt. She was a nurse and knew the importance. She unbuckled her seatbelt to reach for her phone out of her purse one second before the accident. She was killed on impact and it never would have made a difference. His car slammed into her door.
I think we will know much more about the accident and what caused it after we get the results from his tox report. He will never realize what he has done to our family. He will have to live with that forever!

If the 17 yr old boy was traveling northbound on cr 268, which does run north and south, why is he messing with the sunvisor when the sun would be behind him? This is a dangerous intersection, but that stop sign has been there as long as I can remember. I hope that the teen wasn't on his phone or texting. Driving is a serious responsibilty and should always be taken serious. Prayers for all.

This is so sad. In the past, I have asked ODOT to put in "STOP AHEAD" warning signs and dual stop signs (left and right side) plus "rumble strips" before the stop signs. ODOT said "No, too expensive" What is a human life worth? It is okay to put up signs in Ohio about Obama's stimulus that cost well over $1 million but not stop ahead warning signs or dual stop signs? We have some really stupid people working in government. My condolences to the Brummit family. I cannot fault the young driver if he was blinded by the sun if he traveled on an unfamiliar road. Dual stop signs, stop ahead warning signs and rumble strips could have averted this sad situation.

This young man didn't do this on purpose, I am sure he will be haunted by this memory for the rest of his life. He doesn't need us to punish him.

Bob and Faye are good, christian people. They will, I'm sure, forgive this boy for this accident. That doesn't make it any easier for those involved. I just hope this boy learns from this senseless tragedy. So many people nowadays, young and old, simply do not pay close enough attention while driving we ALL could learn. I keep looking for updates on the condition of the Brummitts, does anyone know? Im hoping they are doing ok.. I pray for them, as well as the boy involved.

I am the girlfriend of the boy's father and I believe prayers for ALL involved are what is needed. It was an accident and an awful tragedy for both sides. Imagine being a family member of the Brummit's or the parents of the boy. Would you want to be on either side? Shame on those who think they know what happened and have the nerve to make comments either way. Come on, people, pray, instead of blaming and bashing. Pray, instead of judging.

I suggest we say a prayer for the the people injured and their familes. It is a sad affair to have one family member killed but to have multipe family members injured badly as well, it must be nearly unbearable. It is an accident if you trip and scrape your knee, it is far worse driving a deadly weapon and killing another human being. She was someone's wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, etc.. I flip my visor down when I drive as well but I make sure to keep my eyes on the road. I guess age and experience does make a difference; and although changing the driving age may not be a popular idea amoung younger people, it might be the best one of all to protect other drivers and our youth from themselves. To this young drivers' best friend: it may have been an accident but many people are and will continue to suffer from this "accident." Let us all hope your friend does remember this always because one precious member of the Brummitt family is gone forever because of it.

It is indeed unfortunate for all parties involved. I am not sure I would feel a lot of sympathy for the young man who caused this death. When any of us get behind the wheel of a vehicle we are fully responsible for our actions. When he was 16 yo and accepted his license he agreed to that.
I do not know the situation in this case but young, old, middle aged etc. so many folks today are doing about everything in their cars except driving them resonsibily. Ones mind has to be on driving and not XM radio, Sirrus, talking on the phone, drinking coffee, smoking, texting you name it.
My wife and I when driving almost daily around Firelands College are always amazed at the huge majority of students leaving the parking lot, on Rye Beach Road, etc. that are on the phone. Almost everyone of them has the phone to their ear. We laugh and say what do they have to talk about? They call other students to tell them what happen in class, do they call parents to call them about their class, etc, its like what is so so important. I usually laugh and say you would think they were all CEO's of General Electric, or General Motors etc. its like they have to negotiate major deals immediately. Seems like some are so busy and have to talk on the phone they should not even be at Firelands but rather available 24/7 for phone calls.

Here's another unfortunate example of a teenager thinking that as soon as they become of age they immediately have to have their license. I'm sorry but teenagers are not mature enough to have them - plain and simple! It's my opinion and I don't care who says what about it good or bad otherwise. To many children are out there behind the wheels of cars not paying attention and people are dying. Now in this case it may have truly been because he had the sun in his eyes and it could have just as easily been an adult that caused the accident - I get that and I'm not denying it at all. I'm just saying that if you look at the accident rates by teens it's a heck of a lot higher than that of adults! I've known the Brummitt family for many years and my heart goes out to each of them and to those that are still in the hospital - especially Fay and Willard I can only pray for a quick and full recovery.

Yes. You don't necessarily have to be "flying" for an accident to wind up like this. If he just clipped the front or rear of the SUV and threw it off balance, it would so go out of control it would not be able to restabilize. Very sad accident.
But still SEATBELTS SAVE LIVES.
