Albina Drive residents Pam and Gerald Flegal say they've relied on bottled water and coin laundries for the past several months.

"The water is rusty at best, unsafe at worst," Pam Flegal told council at a recent meeting, where she and her husband held up bottles of discolored water and clothing stained with brownish spots.

Hundreds of Erie County residents tossed their sewer and water bills rather than paying them over the past year.

Nearly 270 residents, in fact, failed to pay more than $100,000 worth of sewer and water bills. The majority of those people live in Huron, said Jack Meyers, director at Erie County Department of Environmental Services.
