Molecule by molecule, over the course of 50 years, steel succumbed to rust under the concrete terrace at Lonz Winery.

Water seeped through steel sheeting, corroding the terrace’s beams and joists.

After Lonz, officials honed island emergency response

As emergency crews tended to dozens of injured victims of the Lonz Winery terrace collapse, they made use of everything available that fateful day.

They unhinged doors to use as backboards. They ripped T-shirts into bandages. They splinted broken ribs with scraps of wood and tape.

Victims recall Lonz tragedy, a decade later

With July 4 approaching, the popular winery buzzed with the holiday weekend excitement of 1,000 people.
