Pool collapses in Norwalk, damaging yards

NORWALK

A Corwin Street resident's above-ground pool collapsed Saturday afternoon, flooding the man's yard and damaging nearby property.

Michael Hoffman told Norwalk police he discovered the damaged after checking on a loud noise, which sounded like a car crash.

Molecule by molecule, over the course of 50 years, steel succumbed to rust under the concrete terrace at Lonz Winery. 

Water seeped through steel sheeting, corroding the terrace’s beams and joists.

They unhinged doors to use as backboards. They ripped T-shirts into bandages. They splinted broken ribs with scraps of wood and tape.

Virginia Mamere, a long-time ER nurse, lounged with a friend on the lawn outside Lonz Winery the afternoon of July 1, 2000.

She basked in the sun and listened to the band, waiting for a fellow nurse’s bachelorette celebration to begin.

“It was a day like today — just gorgeous,” Mamere said Wednesday.

Victims recall Lonz tragedy, a decade later

With July 4 approaching, the popular winery buzzed with the holiday weekend excitement of 1,000 people.

Music bounced off the castle's walls and ricocheted across the island. A light breeze blew off the shoreline, easing the assault of the early summer sunshine.
