Technically, Andrew Carnegie, steel magnate who was originally from Scotland, was the first true philanthropist of the modern age, funding libraries across the United States in an effort to combat illiteracy. Typically, we tend to picture older men and, sometimes, women who have the means to give in large and high-impact ways. But the truth is anyone can be a philanthropist through a community foundation.
