A Sandusky manufacturing plant active for more than 50 years is shutting down production at the end of this week. Thakar Aluminum Corp., 1364 Olds St., told its workers Monday that production will end Friday, a union official said. Court filings show Thakar is in default on millions of dollars of loans.

Virginia I. (Butler) Lutes, 94, of Sandusky passed away Monday, April 26, 2010, in Providence Center after a long illness.

SANDUSKY The jury just came back and they found Thomas Ricks guilty of aggravated murder. Ricks is one of two men suspected in the March 11, 2008, shooting death of Calvin Harper Jr. He faces life in prison. Erie County prosecutor Kevin Baxter described the murder as a set-up in a dangerous environment of drug dealings.

Ellen L. "Thorna" (Brandstrup) Kraus, 78, of Sandusky, died Monday, April 26, 2010, in Stein Hospice Care Center, following a courageous battle with cancer.

 Joan K. Ziss, 63, of Sandusky, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, in Lakewood Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

SANDUSKY Steam comes from the engine block of a semi truck as Perkins fire sprays water to a semi truck that was on fire at Ohio 4, just north of Strub Road today. No one was injured, but traffic had to be rerouted as crews cleared the scene.

Debra J. Smith, 52, of Sandusky, passed away early Saturday morning, April 24, 2010, in Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a lengthy illness.
