Ed Gudenas, owner of the St. Hazards Waterfront Resort on Middle Bass Island, is looking for someone with a warm building, a green thumb and a soft heart for tropical trees. More than 30 palm trees have been brought north and planted at the resort to give his guests a tropical feeling when they vacation on the Lake Erie island, Gudenas said.

NORWALK Yard sales can be a great place to troll for treasures -- or a way for residents to dump their trash. In Norwalk, some sales lasted so long it was hard to tell whether the residents were just trying to peddle some old household items or running a side business.

SANDUSKY The faded, mint-green home on Pearl Street doesn't look like much. Rust and cracks mar the white rainspouts that run alongside the two-story home. Siding near the second-floor window is missing. Across the street, industrial debris protrudes from a fenced-off, overgrown field.

SANDUSKY Q: The Catholic Church owns the properties at 604, 608 and 612 Adams St., which the county is set to demolish. What ever happened to the separation of church and state? Why can't the church pay for its own demolitions, instead of leaching off the taxpayers? -- Jimmy on Boalt Street

SANDUSKY Not signing on to Ohio's application for $400 million in federal education grants didn't mean a whole lot for districts such as Berlin-Milan, Huron and Perkins schools. Those districts, and many of the 289 school districts that declined to participate in Race to the Top, stood to gain $100,000 during the grant's four years.

Paul R. Rice, 82, of Sandusky died early Friday evening, June 18, 2010, in Parkvue Health Care following a lengthy illness.

SANDUSKY Businessmen who own local indoor tanning salons say they feel burned by a new federal tax that will hit them July 1. Starting next month, they'll have to pay a 10 percent federal excise tax -- essentially a sales tax -- on all of their services.

SANDUSKY Remember when city leaders congratulated themselves for fixing all the homes affected by the housing scandal? Mission not-yet-accomplished. The city has successfully repaired 41 homes damaged by malfeasance from 2004-06 in the Community Housing Improvement Program, better known as CHIP.

A defense attorney for accused killer Aaron Gipson is taking aim at Sandusky police. In the third day of Gipson's trial for the 2008 murder of Calvin Harper Jr., attorney John Parker questioned the way police handled a digital recorder that contained a detective's 2008 interview with Gipson.
