Ottawa County magistrate fired
Feb 02
2012
A magistrate for Ottawa County Common Pleas judge was fired on Friday but court officials are refusing to discuss the details.
Lorrain Croy worked as the magistrate for Judge Bruce Winters for three years after moving from before the bench to behind the bench. Croy was an assistant prosecutor with the Ottawa County Prosecutors office for almost nine years.
Winters appointed her to the court on Feb. 9, 2009.
That is until Friday when she was fired for “acts of dishonesty to the court” and “not working in the best interest of the court.”
Winters did not discuss details behind the reason for the firing but did say it was not criminal.
“It involves violations of internal policy and procedure of the court,” said Winters.
There were no records involving Croy with the Ottawa County Sheriffs office or the Port Clinton Police department.
He would not comment when asked if Croy had mishandled any of her assigned cases.
There were no official grievances filed against Croy with the Ohio Supreme Court, according to the high courts Office of Disciplinary Counsel.
Croy was a salaried employee making $75,000 a year.
The county will pay Croy $3,786 for 86.63 hours of vacation time and 5.25 hours of comp time owed to her.
There were no performance reviews in Croy’s personal file.
Croy also would not discuss the details of what led up to the firing but did defend her record.
“I am proud of my work as a magistrate. I have no comment on anything else,” said Croy “I am proud of the families I have worked with and am looking forward to my next opportunity to help people.”

Anyone that can Honestly state there is not a "GOOD OLE BOYS CLUB" in Ottawa County is living in a dream world. This Magistrate from what I have seen and heard was more than fair, just some of the "Good Ole Boys" who have been around the system for a long time did not like her approach. Like HW who not only is an attorney he also unfortunatley is a Guardian et Lidem, boy talk about having both ends of the court system covered, the attorneys are the ones they should look at not her!!!!

Now would be the time the Ottawa County Commissioners take an "inside" look at the happenings at the Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities, since the "newbies" have joined in the administration. I hear sooo much unfair treatment and favoritism occurs on a daily basis in that place. Who monitors these supervisors anyway, the board, doesn't seem apparent they have much doing other than their monthly ususl business b s ...."a free-for -all"!
Time to pop the cork on that place, as well!!

Didn't the sweethearts in Ottawa County work in collusion with the sweethearts in Erie County when they chased after that disbarred Oak Harbor attorney like she was some kind of serial murderer or something?

Most government and private sector corporations allow anyone in mid or high level positions under suspicious scrutiny to resign. It is RARE they are FIRED which immediately triggers media action and public review. Resigning and going away keeps the publicity down and curbs negative damage for both parties. Getting FIRED only aggravates it. Whatever the reason she was fired, it will eventually come out. I do know Ottawa County does not need this publicity with their RECORD unemployment and of course that idiotic liberal, democrack increase in sales tax incurred upon the people who are already depressed. If there is any PROOF that taxing the people more equates to total FAILURE, this is the prime example. You know, exactly like a president. Ha! Ha! I wonder how that is working out for everyone. I see Ottawa County continues to have the royal diadem for unemployment.

Maybe Huron County ought to check out their Magistrates and appointed Guardian Ad LItems! Talk about injustice to the courts!! Think of themselves and NOT what is in the best interest of the children! Even when the children state they don't want to live with the one parent, they are forced to and go from Straight A students to mom feeding them Melatonin so they sleep since she can't deal with the pressure of BEING A MOM!!! Great Job Huron County!!!

Disloyalty to the court is that she did not work to make sure the law was upheld in a just manner. Its not illegal. More of a quality issue. So, apparently, she could have done her job better, but chose not to do so. With our society, I am pretty sure the whole story will come out eventually.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE. Or, at times, a personal illness.

"Croy also would not discuss the details of what led up to the firing but did defend her record...". thats what was said in the paper.
If she was wrongfully terminated, don't you think she may have commented? There is something to this story. She may be a nice person and simply not fit for this position.

007, Is your whole comment IMO? or do you have some facts.
My one time on jury duty, judge winters presided, and was very fair and reasonable. FYI, I am not from PC, but live in Ottawa County.
FruGal: IMO, cannot fathom any good ole boys "men going after women" type of thing. If you are dishonest, don't follow procedures and the law is your career, you should be terminated. In my business, and in the law, if you are dishonest you lose your credibility and it's very hard to get it back

From experience I have found PC to be a dishonest place overall. People often make things up and make others look bad when in fact they are just out to get rid of an honest person who doesn't like the way things are being done or possibly has more integrity. You can't fight city hall. Lifers stick together and often shun newcomers also. There are many unethical and possibly corrupt things going on but they are good at keeping it hidden. I would suppose other cities are just as bad.

Is this position politically appointed or controlled ?
My quess is she spoke unkindly about a higher up.
It's politics. Yes, in our court system.

Let's see if we have this in perspective, a magistrate commits an act that caused an act of dismissal. Yet the court retains the information that led up to the termination. Maybe I am looking at this all wrong, a magistrate is paid by the county tax dollars, thus working for the taxpayers. Who is Winters to keep the information from the public. It's not like they are doing an investigation, she already was TERMINATED. If it would have been another issue of a lesser appointed person, it would have been plastered all over the media. It's obvious that these crooked elected officials feel they are above the law and have the right to be deceptive to the public as shown by their lack of transparency. It doesn't really surprise me as this type of behavior happens all the way to the white house, as we all know once elected all personal records are sealed. Truth be known Winters probably has a few skeletons in his closet and a deal was made with Croy. Remember this Winters, the way times are now people WILL remember how you operated on this issue and your covertness of displaying the truth. IMO you are just as dishonest as the magistrate you fired. Think about that while you sit on your bench pondering your next covert move. What a waste of tax dollars allowing this dolt to operate above the law!!!

"It does not involve anything criminal. ... It's violations of some internal court policies and procedures. Beyond that, I'm not going to comment." somebody has better start talking about this disloyaty to the court. define loyalty to the court? if she didn't do anything criminal, why was she fired? maybe the judge wants one of his cronies to have the job.

"not working in the best interest of the court". so what is the best interest in the court? the previous judge found no fault with her.

Go to the port clinton news herald website and you'll get more details. However, it will not answer all your questions. It appears she did not follow internal procedures and "not working in the best interest of the court". No performance reviews in her file happens at some places and $75k a year doesn't seem like enough for that type of job.

ok, what did she do that was "dishonest" and "not in the best interest of the court"?
Did she not turn over bribe money? Forget to collect it? Give someone a break that wasn't supposed to get one? Send someone's kid to jail that wasn't supposed to go?
Just what does one do to get fired for "dishonesty" that isn't illegal??????? Lie or any of the above????? The tell everything else around here, so why not this?????

That is until Friday when she was fired for “acts of dishonesty to the court” and “not working in the best interest of the court.” where did the newspaper get this information? it was not listed in the dismissal paperwork. maybe she was really honest and refused to go along with the good old boys.
