The FBI agent who supervised the investigation of the southern Michigan-based militia called Hutaree returned to the witness stand for a third day in the federal court trial of members accused of plotting to kill a police officer to ignite a broader overthrow of the government.
Defense attorneys on Thursday continued grilling Special Agent Leslie Larsen about payments made to confidential informant Dan Murray for covert recordings he made of Hutaree meetings and training sessions in the 17 months he was planted in the group.
Murray, 57, was arrested for shooting at his wife in their home during a domestic dispute in February, 2010, nearly a month before authorities swept up nine Hutaree members in raids in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. At the time of the incident, Murray had not trained or participated in Hutaree activities for over a month, but he continued to get cash payments from the FBI for helping agents in translating transcripts of recorded conversations.
Agent Larsen said she decided to have Murray look for suspicious or illegal activity among Hutaree members and paid him more than $30,000 in cash for his time and expenses out of the account the FBI uses for informants. "I made the decision on paying him and what to pay him," she said in response to questions from Joshua Stone's attorney, James Thomas.
According to earlier testimony, Agent Larsen said the Hutaree became the target of the FBI investigation after videos on the group's Web site indicated that its members appeared to be detonating improvised explosive devices and firing automatic weapons in shooting and training maneuvers.
Stone, 23, of Clayton, Mich., and six others, including his father, David Stone, who the government said was the leader of the Hutaree, are accused of conspiring to kill a police officer and then planning to attack law enforcement in the funeral procession in an attempt to trigger an uprising against the government.
Also on trial in U.S. District Court are David Stone's wife, Tina Stone, also of Clayton; his son, David Stone, Jr., of Adrian; Michael Meeks, 40, of Manchester, Mich.; Thomas Piatek, 46, of Whiting, Ind., and Kristopher Sickles, 27, of Sandusky, Ohio.
Joshua Clough, 29, formerly of Blissfield Township, entered into a plea agreement in December and faces a mandatory five-year prison sentence. As part of his plea, he admitted he was in fact a Hutaree member, and that one of the group's goals was to use explosive bombs against law enforcement officers.
A ninth defendant, Jacob Ward of Huron, Ohio, was declared incompetent to stand trial.
Agent Larsen, the first government witness in a trial that could last six to eight weeks, is expected to return Friday, when federal prosecutors will ask rebuttal questions to her testimony during defense questioning.

Among the images that caught the FBI’s attention, Larsen testified, were images of what appeared to be improvised explosive devices, or roadside bombs, going off in the woods, men lined up in military gear shooting large amounts of bullets, either around vehicles, or in closed-quarter drills where the militia members look like they’re entering rooms and shooting at targets. look at the 4 hutaree youtube videos and see if you can spot any roadside bombs. i saw no full auto weapons being shot. who is this larsen? does she have a clue?
