The Sandusky Schools Board of Education approved a motion Monday to talk with Perkins Schools about whether it makes sense to merge two or more school districts in Erie County.

Perkins officials raised the topic at a board meeting last week, and superintendent Jim Gunner said the issue needs more study.

The Sandusky board unanimously voted Monday to express their willingness to take part in that conversation.

In addition to costing us more due to the millage and income tax, it would also lower the value of our properties as Sandusky schools are academically rated poor, while Perkins are excellent.

It'd be great for Sandusky, but terrible for Perkins.

p.s. Zip codes have nothing to do with townships, just the post office. Look for more consolidation of zips as the post office downsizes to remove it's multi billion dollar debt.

YEAH Big G!!!  Let's get honest people,  those of you living in Perkins are against the merger for one reason and one reason only.  FEAR!  fear of what you feel happens in Sandusky schools and are to afraid to admit happens in yours.  Do you honestly mean to tell me : no PHS student has ever had a run in w/ the law, no PHS girl has ever gotten pregnant, that all PHS students come from 2 parent households and that no PHS student has ever used drugs?  These problems are not limited to SANDUSKY OHIO!  At some point these students will be off to college and out from under their parents watch.  If you could look beyond your fears and look at the dollars and Sense, you would see the benefits of haveing 1 city wide high school, 1 city wide jr. high and grade schools as is. As BigG said you could use the tax base of the ENTIRE city to enhance the education of ALL these students.

It truly is time for all of us to put aside the "race" issue and the "snobs" issue as most of the students who are open enrolled either make the adjustment to their new environment or return to their home school. Parents will place their children in an environment where they believe they will thrive. Students will thrive if they have both the support of the school and their family to learn. It's truly about one's perception of each school district and how much we as adults are ready to support the children of our community,

I agree the SPORTS TALENT pool of a multi district merger would be astronomical. The school would be able to have Varsity, Jr. Varsity and Freshman teams in most sports without having to no have a team or a depleted team because of academics. I can see muliple state championships in mulitple sports.

For those that say renters don't pay their share of the taxes BS taxes are taken out of my paycheck as well asa portion of the rent I pay includes  the taxes my landlord pays for the building I live in, so for all you RENTER HATERS get your facts straight. I have rented my dwelling for nearly 5 years without one (1) complaint from neighbors in the building or from surrounding homeowners. I have been steadly employed since moving to Ohio 6 years ago. I love Sandusky.

To the people of PERKINS TOWNSHIP...when you receive mail or send mail how do you address your envelopes like this

EXAMPLE:

John Doe

123 Any Street

Perkins Township, Ohio 11111(a zip code )

or do you address your envelopes

John Doe

123 Any Street

SANDUSKY, OHIO 44870

If you don't want the merge because of property values..incorporate your township get your own post officeand become the CITY of PERKINS

Think of things in this light

A merge of The City Sandusky, Perkins Township and possibly Margaretta Township, which by the way part of uses Sandusky, Ohio 44870 in their mailing address. The tax base may be lower due to lower values of homes but the revenue would grow exponentially and benefit the entire district, the BOE would be better with the good parts from each, the local government would be better with more of a talent pool to pull from, the Safety services(Police , Fire and EMT) would grow to be able to combat the problems facing all of the areas, Yes there would be some job loss to teachers and ADMINISTRATORS as well as not having to pay for multiple Superintendents and Associate  Superintendents , no need for multiple Principals and Assistant Principles, just think of the money saved by not having to pay for 2 Superintendents(approximate savings $300,000 per year) 2 Associate Superintendents(approximate savings $200,000 per year) Hey i just save the district a half a Million dollars while increasing revenue.

Just a thought

RE: Moondog

It is only medicore education if you put a medicore effort into it. It doesn't matter what school system you are in, it comes down to decision making and parental support.  I still think Sandusky offers the best all around education in the area. There are many wonderful kids, but Sandusky has always got a bad rap from the white surrounding communities who are scared of diversity. All schools have problems, yes, this means you Perkins, and they are not all open enrolled kids. Things are changing, Sandusky is in a funk so to speak, but education has to be there as an avenue for some children. Do I think merging the schools is going to happen? No way! Is it a good thing, I think it could be very positive with the right people leading the ship. However, it will never happen in my lifetime, unless the state comes in and forces a merge, which is unlikely. The bottom line is that many of the students at Sandusky and Perkins are friends, so why can't adults and other community members that all live in the 44870 area code do the same.

opinionated - you reflect a lot more of Perkins parents than this BOE and Super want to admit.  More people I talk to share your opinion than the posters who seem to think that Gunner is advancing our district.

You're right, the district isn't healed from the strike.  Furthermore, the failed levy in November divided an already fractured internal school community.  We had teachers against the BOE and BOE against the teachers.  We had OPSE against the BOE and BOE against OPSE.

Now, we've added to that levy supporters against levy opponents.   Great job BOE.

I've gone to meetings.  I've written letters.  I've articulated my concerns.  They don't want to hear them.  All the while, they scratch their heads and claim that they can't get a read on the community.

They advanced the one-to-one laptop initiative without fully engaging the parents first; without fully considering safety and privacy concerns; without considering discipline and behavioral issues attached to having cameras,  "i-chat" or "yahoo messenger" on the laptops.

And don't get me started about the stupidity of virtually unrestricted cell phone use among middle school and high school students.   Last week, the talk among students was  bomb texting "whore" and "fag" to each other ... during school hours.   Nice.

And the problem with open enrollment was that it was essentially sprung on the community.  No chance for the district to prepare and say, "It is happening next year and this is what we are doing this year to prepare."   Nope.   Just "poof" and open enrollment arrives.

It isn't a race thing for me.   The open enrollment students (volume of students more than type of student) reveals the inadequacies in the school district's student management.   The district has had lax discipline for years and add to that a huge influx of kids and you're going to have behavior problems.   They did and do.

===================

And to the posters who think that the SR manufactured the possibility of a merger. That is just not true.  Sandusky's BOE passed a resolution to begin discussion with Perkins re: merging.  Perkins listed the possibility of merging with Sandusky City Schools.  They didn't manufacture this possibility.

That being said, it comes off as a threat from Gunner just like cancelling the football season.

You don't need to hear from me.  Obviously you believe the propaganda.  It's not up to me to convince you otherwise as you are entitled to your opinion but you asked for it....

Who cares where Gunner lives?  I do! And so do hundreds of other residents.  I don't care why he lives in Oregon.  I care that it's not HERE.

We have NOT recovered from the strike, just read the blogs from when the support staff was in negotiations, on the verge of a strike.  Sure the teachers gave up a raise, and they had no choice on the insurance after it was imposed on the support staff, but it hasn't been reported what they received in exchange.

Excellent ratings don't happen in a year.  It takes years to bring scores up, just ask Sandusky.  So was it his leadership?  Let's look forward to the next grade card and see.

Holds his staff accountable?!?!  The ONLY reason the two were disciplined was because he didn't have a choice!  Look at the entire staff and tell me truthfully if they are all held equally accountable.  Are your edline grades always updated or the school calendar and website?  We ARE a technology school after all.

Of course teachers and administrators are going to work together on the STEM initiative, it's their JOB!  What are we doing for the rest of the student body?  Look at our Alumni, we traditionally graduate more creative arts professionals (Randy Westgate!) than we do scientists, doctors or engeneers.

Laptops can be a great tools, if monitored and used correctly.  Do they really need to have them 24/7?  How many discipline problems have there been?  How many broken computers?  How much additional money has the school "made" off of computer fees?

The survey...ah, yes.  Let's spend more more money (out of our community) instead of listening to the public, and then let's see how we can twist the facts. No one is sticking their head in the sand, we just just don't want to be TOLD what we HAVE to do, just because it's the choice THEY want.  (And again, that 5-6 mils is paying for their education.  I listened to them, we will STILL be needing a levy.)

And I am WAY too opinionated to be a GOOD board member!

I posted this on the other stream. I thought it was pertinent here in response to opinionated’s post. I could not disagree with that post more…

Does it really matter where the superintendent lives? Who really cares? If I remember correctly Jason did an article a while back in his “Jason’s Mailbag” which clearly laid out that Gunner intended to move here but had family health problems that drove him to Oregon.

All that matters is his results… Perkins has recovered from the strike. The staff and administration have collaborated well on the STEM initiative. They have achieved labor peace as is evident by the new teacher contract with zero raises and insurance concessions. He has progressed Perkins into the new millennium by focusing education where our nation lacks- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. I can speak directly that my son has advanced exponentially with the use of his laptop.  Unlike other districts, he holds his staff accountable as is evident by the teachers he has disciplined.  And, he has returned Perkins to an Excellent rating on the state report card.

As far as taxes, this internet stuff can be pretty useful. Perkins pays a total of 48 mils. Oregon pays 57 mils. AND Oregon has a 2.25% income tax. He’s obviously not living in Oregon for the lower tax rates.

It’s easy and convenient to criticize this man. The facts are that he has gotten great results. The building issue is a tough one. We will see if the new plan is what the community wants. At least he doesn’t stick his head in the sand and pretend that everything is ok.

I will add one more thought… like them or not the BOE is taking issues head on. To hide their heads in the sand and pretend that the buildings will magically take care of themselves is not going to work. They reacted to the levy failure, did a survey to find out what people wanted, which has lead us here to where we are now.

Opinionated, now is your chance, what’s your real name. We’ll sign your petition for the school board.

Quick math on OE... $5700 x 400 kids = $2,280,000 per year.  That's like 5-6 mils.  Get real

Many parents' desire to have their kids go to the "best" school has as much do with snobbery and racism as anything else. A particular kid won't necessarily do any better in a school with good test scores. Test scores don't predict much. What they correlate to best is how much money the kids' parents have. How well your kid does has nothing to do with the test scores of the rest of the kids in the school and a lot to do with his or her inate abilities and how engaged you are in your kids' education.

If all you care about is the three r's, fine. But SHS has a lot to offer for a more rounded eduction, with programs and classes other districts won't even consider.

How dare they!  Our BOE hired Gunner, who DRIVES  to OUR community for a job, taking his money elsewhere to spend, they implement a STEM school without seeing if it was a good fit for our community and school, gave everyone a laptop (teachers and administration are on their second!), created open enrollment, which in itself creates a merger that the community had no say in, tell our athletic director to stop looking for funding for our athletic facilities, since it will be wrapped in to the "new school", expect us to pay for your new school complex, and when that fails you tear down and condem our bleachers and then hold us hostage and tell us that if we want our stadium, then we'll have to pass a levy to build a new school and stadium or you'll threaten to merge with another school! Go to ...Oregon and see if they still want you.

You were hired in March and by June were looking for another job.  Shame on our BOE for keeping you!  It was obvious you were not the right fit for our community. You wanted out right away and lacked the committment to move here and become part of our community.  By not living here, you have no idea what the feelings in the community are, our BOE has no idea either.  Show me one board member who is in fear of losing his job or who has had to really tighten his personal budget because of a drastic decline in the economy.  I don't mean whether or not they should take a vacation or two this year, but should they buy milk or bread this week.  They don't represent the majority of the community!

Yes, the school is showing it's age, and will cost a lot to repair, but that cost is being inflated by the "Wants" that Gunner and the BOE are looking at to upgrade the facility to better support a STEM school setting.  Bellevue was just recognized in Cedar Point latest contest for coaster designs and they're not a STEM school, they don't have personal laptops, and they even have to deal with more snow days than most! (great job Bellevue teachers!)  I will pay to support my child's education and those of my community, but I will NOT pay for open enrollment.  Yes, I know that the money comes with them, but that pays for their education.  The building and grounds take much more abuse by having so many more students and visitors, and yes some of that damage is vandalism, which has increased since open enrollment as well as theft in the schools.  (And all of the open enrolled students DO NOT come from Sandusky!)

I moved to Perkins because I liked the feel of the community, more neighborhoods, rural, small school, etc.  It was simply personal preference.  When the kids are gone, maybe I'll look at one of the waterfront condos...I can still appreciate what Sandusky has to offer.  But when I chose to live and buy a house here, I made one of the most important investments of my life, and I will not have 5 board members and a superintendent devalue that investment or tear my community apart!  Three of them will be ending their terms in November, hopefully.

Let's see, with open enrollment  the money follows the child, right?  So, if you wish to attend one public school over another, which is only down the road about 4 miles from your home, let alone less than 3 mi. from the school ya want to attend and located within the same 44870 zipcode area..........They're both public schools, and until the issue w/funding is addressed by our State leaders,  is paid for with taxpayer $$$$ 's.  Why not have a right to choose which school you would prefer your child to attend? You live in a certain area out on South Rt. 4, you can choose Perkins or Margaretta.    You hear the same arguement from those sending their children to private/charter schools.   Thanks to Boehner and D.C., they'll be receiving vouchers to do just that!  Where is the outrage over that?

Sounds like racism?  I would be curious to know some stats here, should anyone posting know and be willing to provide........The majority of students that have transferred, .what are the ages/grade levels of the students that have sought to transfer from SCS to Perkins?  Just how old are all those "lil thugs", all those lil ghetto urchins? Just how many have been accepted, only to be turned away and the $$$'s kept?    Which areas of Sandusky would be considered ghetto?  Or is it  just all of the Sandusky area, north of that "double yellow line"?  See, cause I remember when i was growing up, a couple of my friends parents actually commented to me that I  "lived on the wrong side of the tracks".  Who knew the westend in the 60's and 70's was the wrong side of the tracks?

See, I have a step-grandson seeking open-enrollment @ Perkins.  He's all of  5 yrs. old, and has been a part of our lives for over 3 yrs. now.  It's the wishes of all involved, his Mother and Father, his biological Grandparents,, our Son, a graduate of PHS and us.     They live less than a mile from where Sandusky turns into Perkins for a brief moment, and then Huron.  Should he be so fortunate as to be accepted , will those w/closed minds, those willing to stereotype even small children, treat him as if he's an outsider, trash, one of those "lil thugs" they're all referring too?   Cause this is one Nana that'll put a stop to that crap quicker than you can say "racist"!   You may think it all you want, but the moment you start treating any child in that manner, is the moment you've become no better than the "thugs" you're so quick to pre-judge, to stereotype.  I know how it feels.    I'm more than willing to protect the rights of this 5 yr. old child, (all children),  just as much as I'll be willing to protect the rights of our 9 mo. old grandson who we also hope will be able to attend Perkins Schools as well!

By the way, I'm a "75" graduate of Sandusky Schools.   Loved school, learned alot about life throughout my 6 yrs. w/SCS's,  7-9th. being the most  trying.    What does Sandusky have to offer? More than you know, and absolutely nothing if your mind is closed off!  How sad this discussion is, as it seems there are issues on both sides of that  "double yellow line"  that need addressed!

To Informed:

If there is inclusion then why are there Perkins students, along with others from neighboring districts other than Sandusky,  who have behavioral problems out at Townsend School right now and not "included" in the normal class settings in their schools?

Merging schools is inevitable with the way the state is cutting funding there is no way school systems like the ones we have around here will be able to survive alone.  It may not come in the next couple of years but it will happen.  If Perkins residents think this is all the open enrolled students fault look in the mirror you were the ones who elected the BOE members who approved open enrollment and no one was complaing when your kids received new laptops from the millons you received from state funding for each one of those open enrolled students.

Right, the kids that don't want to learn could just stay in Sandusky schools like they do right now.............................................WINNING!

A merger would not be a bad idea and I think Perkin's parents would feel better if there was another school that the kids who don't want to learn go too.  Therefore, it leaves the majority of kids who care about learning and the ones that don't at a separate facility.

Any levy for construction or renovation will fail.  Why don't these people get it?  (arrogance)  The community spoke in the fall and they spoke again at that special board meeting in March.

Had coffee with a few friends this morning who attend a meeting last night with Mr. Gunner. He gave four options for the Perkins school system.

1. Stay the same and maintain the present high school.

2. Gut the present high school and rebuild.

3. Build a new high school.

4. Merger with another system.

He informed the group that option no. 1 is not acceptable by himself or the board. He also said no.4 is not an acceptable option. So that leaves the community with rebuild the high school or build a new high school. Why all the "spin on four different options if two have been deemed unacceptable by himself and the school board?

Bottom line, Mr. Gunner wants his new school and he wants it now. Get out of his way you ungrateful taxpayers.

Here is what I don't understand .... IF the high school is in need of a 29 million dollar upgrade then how would it be any more usable if Sandusky and Perkins merge?

I believe this is a power play by Gunner the the BOE to get the levy passed for a new school. He knows a lot of people in Perkins do not want to merge with Sandusky, so they would vote for the levy. My vote is still no!!! Why do schools not maintain the buildings, etc, ? Seems to me a school is just like your home, one has to maintain the building and grounds.

Sandusky has a higher property tax rate than Perkins.

Sandusky schools aren't in any better physical shape than Perkins schools.

This merger is a lose/lose for Perkins.

re; CedarPoint8182, YES you are correct, but. It all has to do with Money. Where is the City going to get its money to pay there teachers large wages (over 100 dollars per hour)  these levies past by the non producing class lower class, and want to breed with upper class, If the City would tax the dope dealers I see every time I go to town, the City would not have a problem with taxes. And they want to send dope dealers to other school districts? Will these students be tested for Drugs to STOP the murders at the Boarders?
