The employees at The Mattress Warehouse want to get you into a bed.

You sleep away a third of your life, and Stephen Hayward wants to help you select the best mattress for your sleeping patterns. The store has more than 30 of them to try.

“We spend more time in bed than playing games, watching TV, using a laptop, driving or exercising combined,” Hayward said. “Think how much you spend on those items.”

The Mattress Warehouse opened in The Crossings on U.S. 250 in November and celebrated the new store with a grand opening in January.

Hayward, who worked for a mattress company in New York before moving back to Ohio, said he choose to work for The Mattress Warehouse because of its family environment and emphasis on customer service.

“We care,” said Hayward.

Hayward said someone can do all the research they want on the newest technology used in building mattresses but the feel of the bed is most important. The employees in the showroom spend time with customers to make sure they select the right bed for their sleep style.

“I am very good at what I do but we do have 120 days to try the mattress and return it if its not right,” said Hayward. “Our customer service? You will be talking to one of six people and they will say, ‘Here is my direct line call me if there is a problem.’”

And a good night’s sleep is crucial.

Doctors now say exercise, diet and sleep are the three most important components to a healthy lifestyle, said Hayward.

“You would not believe how many people say, ‘I do not know how I was sleeping,’” said Hayward.

The Mattress Warehouse was founded in 1983 in Charleston, W. Va. by Kim Knops. Today it employs more than 400 people in five states.

Zach Rogers, regional marketing specialist, said the move into Sandusky fit in with the company’s expansion plan.

“We found a great location. We are trying to expand into Cleveland and Sandusky. We hope to expand across the state,” Rogers said.
