Randleman trial could top $300K
Feb 17
2012
Ohio Supreme Court officials estimate local taxpayers will spend $300,000 for trial costs throughout the duration of Kevin Randleman's case before appeals.
Randleman is accused of killing Sandusky police Officer Andrew Dunn in a March 19 shoot-out near Firelands Regional Medical Center. He was arrested immediately after the shooting and is awaiting trial on murder charges.
Erie County commissioners said they anticipate paying $75,000 on defense-related costs for Randleman this year, and they'll budget for similar amounts in years following until the case concludes.
Pick up Friday's Register to read more about the costs associated with this case.

While not thrilled that he might take a plea, getting this and the pain involved over for the Dunn family would be a viable solution. My heart breaks for them having to sit in court and look at this man who took the life of their loved one. To the Dunn family, stay strong for Andy. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers through this ordeal.

Do you really think that the "bottom feeders" (attorneys) for Randleman really care about us taxpayers. They will drain every cent out of this case that they can and laugh all the way to the bank. I personally feel Randleman is guilty of the crime. I look for a plea deal.

sadly, I think that during the trial, it will somehow turn into a racial battle... there is no cause for that, but any desperate defense lawyer will have to put that into the minds of the jurrors and the community , it is his only possible way to get this guy freed..... Just like the O J trial, we all know it had NOTHING to do with race, or prejudice, or anything at all like that, yet look at how the "dream team" turned the facts around enough, to plant a possible racially motivated Ploce detective.. into causing reasonable doubt.....and now we are even to the point where one of the Dream teams shadiest lawyers , children are celebrities????what a circus, where is the justice...I fear that this will tuurn into a racial circus very quickly..

From Jeff Ashton, one of the prosecutors in the Casey Anthony case:
Aside from the legal issues, there are practical issues to consider. A case in which the death penalty is sought involves a substantial expenditure of public resources, so my feeling has always been that, as with any other prosecution decision, the cost must be weighed. I believe all public officials who have the power to spend the public's money should take into account how much it is going to cost the taxpayers. However, it cannot be the driving force in any decision. Justice doesn't have a price. The two must be balanced. Casey Anthony's case was a tough one to balance. The most frustrating part of the analysis was that in reality, the issue that would probably be in the minds of the jurors would be the very one they should not be considering: that Casey Anthony was an attractive, middle-class Caucasian girl. How would the jury view this if Casey were a father and not a mother? How about if she were African-American or Hispanic? What if she were poor or extremely wealthy? I concluded that under any circumstance, the death penalty for Casey Anthony could be lawfully sought in good faith. But based upon my experience, the odds of the jury actually voting to recommend it were exceedingly small.

This guy has bleed off society all his life. From assistance when he was born then all kinds of programs to include those in schools for kids that won't learn to assistance all his adult life. He has never contributed to the tax base only sucked off it.
Come June when this trail finally comes to reality it will be a zoo at Erie County Courthouse. Sure the TV vans and live feeds to the television stations will be all over the lawn. Special parking in place for the area around the courthouse. AND thru it all this Randleman will arrive daily in the Sheriff's van from the jail and he will think he is a star.....he comes into court now all smiles like he is God's gift to Erie County.
Then when all this is thru it will be countless appeals and more $100,000 's spent and finally in some 20 years they will finally put this guy on the gurney snd give him the letal injection but by that time he will be 70+ living a good old life off the taxpayer.
What just breaks your heart is Officer Dunn only had 30 years of life and through all this he lies in a casket at the ceremony. His children, wife, parents and family/friends never having him at all the family gathers and ceremonys etc. That is the thing that breaks your heart this Randleman will live to a ripe old age and so much of Officer Dunn's life is gone forever.
God Bless those who put on a uniform and protect us from the trash like Kevin Randleman.

Here is how the defense team should be paid.
If they win for their scumbag they collect their fees.
If they lose and this time they will big time they collect NADA, ZIP, ZILCH.
That $300k price tag would get a lot smaller real fast. And the high dollar circling buzzard dream team defense lawyers would think real hard and long before defending a pile of trash like this.
Since he claims poverty give him the public defender and suck it up sunshine here is your lawyer, deal with it.

Taxpayer....if Obama comes to town for Randleman's trial, I hope you get to meet him. And I hope he brings all his LIBERAL friends with him. But you don't know squat about your history, do you. Because the Supreme Court Justices who set the precedences for most of the bad decisions on law in this country since the Reagan years were appointed by REPUBLICAN presidents....including Reagan. and they haven't done well. And who told YOU that the death penalty is "off the table" No one else has heard that? Do you have some inside info?
To Starryeyes.....love the comment.....LOLOLOL. BadaBing.....I am with you! Lloyd Christmas, I will GIVE you the dollar and fifty cents for your time. I will even DRIVE you there in a limo. and take you to dinner afterward.
This is ridiculous. This is nothing more than the attorneys making money on the backs of the people. They can get this done in a heartbeat. Ask Bailey, isn't he Randleman's attorney? Why does he need so long?

Kevin Randelman should have been institutionalized for mental impairment three decades ago. We can thank the late President Ronald Reagan for the deinstitutionalization of tens of thousands of people like Kevin. Many of these people are in prison. Many of the non-violent ones are homeless. Their criminal proceedings provide millions of dollars for both prosecuting and defense attorneys, at taxpayer expense. And, Mrs. Dunn, you and your children are in my thoughts and prayers. You didn't ask for or deserve any of this insanity that is going down.

$300K?? Wow, what a shocking amount. Here is a tip. I predict the total cost for arrest, health care for being shot, mental evaluations, jail, every pre-trial caucus, jury selection, trial, more health care, sentencing investigation meetings, prison and ALL the appeals will place the cost OVER a half MILLION!! If there is enough credence for appeal to the SCOTUS, OVER a MILLION!! Get ready Erie County. Like I have posted before, WE will get the final bill for this. The death penalty is already OFF the table to cut costs and appease certain groups. Your posted comments are only meant to make yourselves "FEEL GOOD" because they do NOT mean squat unless YOU are on the jury. You need to WAKE UP and read all those previous posts the Register had to shut down because of the vitriolic, hateful, racist, and venomous posts by everyone back in March. It morphed into TWO camps and involved people who suddenly popped up and never posted on this blog. A lot of posts PROVED the failure of the UNION public school system and the failure of liberal individuals who want entitlements for doing NOTHING. It was incredible. You will never know how pervasive the public school failure extends until you actually read it. Oh, I forgot, it is the usual liberal, loser premise of, "Out of sight, out of MIND." Ha! Ha! Come on liberal Erie County. Stand UP and dig DEEP into your pockets. That "justice for all" you demand is NOT cheap. It is NOT free and is NOT listed in the long inventory of liberal, crybaby entitlements and freebies. I know a county commissioner CLAIMS to have given you $106 MILLION in wonderful assets, but it WILL be more! This time YOU will have to PAY instead of getting free stuff! Oops, that goes for the people who PAY taxes. Got to love ALL those socialistic, progressive, social justice, liberal programs by the "unifier" or the "messiah" or the "anointed one" for doing absolutely NOTHING! Maybe we can FORCE the rich in this county to PAY for it? Yeah, that will work right losers? Exactly like your president. Ha! Ha! Prepare yourselves NOW for the possible outcome of this trial. From my OWN survey of the "community" it does not look good. It is amazingly 50% NOT GUILTY to 50% somewhat or possibly guilty. NO ONE will be happy with the verdict. So much for that 0bama call for "civility" to the nation. Ha! Ha!

Re: Randleman's mental capacity, if he was incapable of knowing right from wrong, why did he shoot in the first place? As the story goes, he might have been afraid of being caught with an illegal firearm. He might have been afraid of being arrested for public intoxication. He might have had concerns about going back to jail. ANY of these things speak to Randleman's capability of understanding cause and effect.
All of that being said, the average three year-old knows the difference between being "bad" and being "good." To date, while I've seen various comments suggesting that Randleman isn't the brightest bulb on the string, nobody has claimed he's at or below THAT level!
What he's accused of doing was incredibly stupid (not to mention cruel and evil). That doesn't mean his mental capacity is best defined as "incredibly stupid!"

My Opinion is... says
I'm pretty sure the defense is going to question this thug wannabe's mental capacity - was he capable of comprehending the outcome of his actions. In my opinion, if he had the mental capacity to obtain a gun, which had to have been obtained illegally because this man is a convicted felon and he would not be able to obtain one legally, then he had the mental capacity to fully comprehend his actions and the outcome. For all the Randleman supporters who want to claim Officer Dunn had no probable cause to stop Randleman in the first place - here is a known thug wannabe riding around on his bicycle at 2 or 3 a.m.; If nothing else, the time may indicate he may be intoxicated. More importantly, Officer Dunn was completely accurate in his probable assumption - this guy is up to no good. A convicted felon riding around on his bicycle in the middle of the night carrying a concealed, illegally obtained, firearm. Officer Dunn was doing his duty to serve and protect the good, law abiding people of this city. If you're not abiding by the law, you don't deserve the police service or protection.

Our process is very broken when a person who is on video and practically caught in the act is given a full blown trial.Has not claimed he is innocent and there is absolutely NO DOUBT he did it. If they wanna have any kind of trial they should pick a jury let them see the video and confirm the weapon was used .....GUILTY!!! Dinner date with the execution chamber within a day. Done Justice Served!! Sad when our justice system will only let you plead guilty to relatively minor offenses but wont allow you to plead to serious offenses unless you are going to get a DEAL. Not sure where that was written into the constitution? Has anyone ever plead guilty and gotten the death penalty without a trial and then a ridiculous appeal after having pled guilty???

Do lawyers do this deliberately to make more money or what???? The only people at the scene were Andy and Randleman.
It isn't like they have a bunch of witnesses to depose. They have ONE dash-cam to look at and some tapes. So what else do they need to look at??
