The man who became city commissioner following publicity he received after mowing an overgrown city park now faces his own upkeep issues.

City officials said they will cite John Hamilton with code violations because of the poor condition of his business on Ogontz and Fourth Street.

Officials inspected the business after a complaint from a neighbor.

Yes, Julie should run for office, gawd forbid, if she thinks she's good for the world.  but she hasn't done nothing to fix the murdurous misdeads of K-Sea TransportationPartners of E Brunswick, New Joisey, who are singlehandedly responsible for the deaths of two young tourists, aged 16 and 20, who came to this "wonderful" cuntry, arranged by a Methodist Church in Philly, hoping to see this great place.  And the K-Sea tugboat didn't answer the Duck Boat's cries to stop the Attack.  And now the 5th Amendment, that Great American Institution, lets the tugboat's "mate" and DjewBasturd Lawyer (they have lots of those in Cleveland) refuse to testify.  "Sure I killed the kids, but I don't have to admit to it".  Gawd help us.  You don't have to just Lie, you can just STFU at the Coast Guard and at America and their visitors.  "Justice in the Court"?  Or "Patronize the Lawyers".

The city cleanup is going very slow in this town.  Sandusky is allowing the county to take their grants and use them in Sandusky which is a good thing, but it appears tthat Sandusky is taking their CDBG funds for demolishing and spending it on parks like Lions Park instead of using more CDBG funds for demolishing more homes over and above what the county is doing.  It seems the county is taking down more homes then Sandusky is taking down in just a short time.  Houses and streets have to be taken care if if we are to make any progress in bringing people into our city.  Our city should look like someone cares how it looks to visitors coming into our city.

RE: Julie R.  I can finally agree with you on this one thing. Hamilton is being bullied by the the GOB alright! The new voting block doesn't like the way he is voting so Kaman makes a special trip to Hamiltons property with the inspector, Come on!!!!!! Since when does an elected official escort a code compliance officer to do an inspection.  Never! John, tell Dee, Dave, Kim and Dan you do not need their approval before you vote! Keep up the good work John. The Housing Appeals Board will give you 3-5 extentions to get your property fixed up anyway. Heck! You have at least a year to get it done. Don't Rush!! That is why we can't get these crappy houses torn down quick enough. That Housing Appeals Board needs to stop feeling sorry for people and start saying NO to all their crying.

If we were allowed to live by some commissioners examples, we would not need to own a home in Sandusky, could live off public housing for ever and a day, get arrested, and so on. Just a few examples. I could give more, but they are second hand knowledge, so I'll leave them alone.

Logically, it would seem that a person who wants to “lead” the City, should “lead by example”. I don’t know Mr. Hamilton, but I do know that if you want to be a leader of people, you need to start with yourself. You can’t say, “Well, what about the City?” – “Well, what about you”? That isn’t being a leader - that is being juvenile. Genuine leaders take the higher road; do what’s right...even if it means some extra hard work. Nobody ever said being a (good) leader was going to be easy.

NOW THE CITY WANTS TO SPEND TAX PAYER FUNDS ON A NEW "LION OF A PARK."  Where are the short term, and LONG TERM PLANS FOR THIS CITY, AND WHY CAN'T THE CITY RESIDENTS SEE THE PRESENT FORM OF CITY GOVERNMENT "DOESN'T WORK..."

Overhaul the form of government, HIRE PROFESSIONALS - not the same old good'ole'boys, and ELECT A FULL TIME MAYOR, WITH 4-ELECTED COUNCILMAN... REPRESENTING 3-WARDS AND 1 AT-LARGE...  At city commission meetings there are 7-people up there looking as if they have no idea what is going on in the world... A CITY MGR running the city into the ground, and "city planner" TOTALLY LOST....  WHERE ARE THE COMPREHENSIVE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE EVOLUTION OF A CITY LOCATED ON A GOLD MINE LAKE SHORE!!!  A gold mine of proportions ALL CAN BE HAPPY...    John Hamilton should not get any special breaks because he is on the Commission, but he also should not be treated any worse.

In general there seem to be real problems with code enforement in this town.

I had to get that paint fixed though or I faced citation into court. You better get out there and get to work on that place. Your no better then me. I do agree however that the Keller building is one of the biggest eyesores in this town, as is the Sandusky Cabinet property.

The Keller Building is a special case; the city is legally obligated to try in good faith to save that building.

Anb what sense does it make to tear down an historic paper factory in a place you're promoting as the "Historic Paper District" ???

But have they really tried to save it? The Keller building was in much better shape when the city bought it. Buying it of course made no sense if they intended to tear it down, but small minds saw no potential and undermined the few and inept attempt at properly mothballing the building and even today the building is not properly secured.

Teardown historic structures is irreversible. Rushing to do so is foolish and reckless; other cities have learned this in hindsight.

OK, so I see photo's of peeling paint, poor grout lines, broken windows, sidewalks needing replacement, and vegetation overgrowth.   And the irony of it all involves commissioner John Hamilton, who brought justice to an overgrown city-owned ballfield.   How coincidental.

The deteriorating condition of this building and property did not occur overnight.   It's every property owner's responsibility (including the City of Sandusky) to provide continued maintenance of their property.   So while Mr. Hamilton's building/property at 4th and Ogontz is being brought to justice, so too should every piece of city-owned property face the same scrutiny and public recognition.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon.    The Keller building/property is a fine example.

The city should talk.  Look at the shape their buildings are in.  Check out the buildings downtown especially the one across from the county building with the windows all boarded up.  There seems to be a double standard but a code is a code and unless someone lodges a complaint, nothing gets done.  The first complaint gets the ball rolling.  Maybe someone has to file a complaint on the Keller building, did you ever think of that or the Sandusky Cabinets place.  More people need to be stepping forward.  All it takes is a complaint to clean up properties that have never been complained on before and have been rotting for years. Some of the most wealthy people in town own these crappy buildings and maybe that is why no action is being taken on them.

This is interesting only for its mild irony, which would be greater if the apparent violations weren't trivial compared to so many other properties. Not really much of a story here yet, and incomplete. Typically, owners are warned before citation is issued. Did or will that happen iin this case?

Why aren't there more citations issued for the serieously decrepid buildings in the city? With every violation comes a sob story about how complying with the law will inconvenience the owner. Fighting this decay takes political courage.

While his opinions are based upon fact, Factitious reserves the right to make stuff up.

feel free to do your part to  make the city look nice, and cut through the "red tape" that exists, like this man did, and get the job done!! BUT don't think that you are not stepping on some "Officials "toes.. and they will find a way to get you back... they will do an investigation into your taxes, property or otherwise, or they will make sure that your license plates are  exactly right, or make sure that you are well within the perimeters of your  property lines, or that you are not  doing any "illegal" burning" on your property.. although some burning is considered to be a "camp fire, or cooking fire" and that is permitted, but have the same exact fire, if you have stepped on the wrong toes, and it is considered to be "Brush" fires and is illegal..and you will be reprimanded and fined accordingly..

it would be well worth the citizens giving their opinions, loudly, about this situation, otherwise, it might be you next who is cited, or fined, or punished .. for doing the right thing...

So, lets look at WHY this guys property may not be up to snuff, MAYBE its because Sandusky has over legislated their city to the point that all the businesses have LEFT and took the jobs with them? I think SO!
