UPDATE: Just before 12:30 p.m., Jackson Learning Center and Sandusky Central Catholic School came dangerously close to hosting the latest suspected shooting.

Parents were taking children to kindergarten screening at Jackson Learning Center — some standing outside with children — when witnesses saw two men drive up in a van.  A number of other children, meanwhile, were on the playground nearby at Sandusky Central Catholic School when the van pulled up.

And then, a violent pop interrupted the laughter.

The two men fled in the van as parents and kids ran inside the former Jackson Jr. High, while children outside St. Mary’s quickly rushed inside that school, the doors locking automatically behind them.

Both school buildings went into lockdown for half an hour, until Sandusky police officers told school officials it was safe to reopen.

Read more about the incident in Tuesday's Register.

MONDAY'S STORY: The Jackson Learning Center went into lock-down mode thid afternoon after a gunshot sounded nearby.

Parents, children and school officials were inside the building for kindergarten registration when witnesses said a blue van with two men inside pulled up at the intersection of Decatur and W. Madison streets and shot at something before taking off.

I have to agree with beepx22. To sit down with these delinquints is giving them one more thing they want, to be recognized as a threat and as stupid as this sounds, respect. I would rather see them having a conversation in a prison yard during exercise time. Anyone who does any or all of the crimes associated with gangs cannot be trusted. That is my opinion.Would any of you trust them? Why should SPD waste their breath. How about confidential informnants ? A lot of people probably know enough to bust the main idiots and are too scared to say anything. I do believe they probably have more than four guns, though, maybe ten.

As I said in my earlier post, negotiating may not work. Some of these guys have no fear of authority and no fear of prison. Negotiation is an alternative that as far as I know hasn't been tried yet and I was throwing it out there as an option. To clarify, what I am suggesting is a sitdown between the rivals not the bad guys and the police. Of course I wouldn't expect law enforcement to offer any free passes for previous crimes. That is not what this is about. The type of discussions I am talking about have worked in Boston. They have worked in Los Angeles. They have worked in other cities. Did it completely eliminate this type of activity? No, but it sure slowed it down. It may not work here and it may not even be accepted by any side here. It seems that all everyone posting here wants to do is cut off the bad guys hands or bust their knees with a baseball bat. All that will do is land you in jail beside them but if that's what you all are sure will stop this then by all means go for it.

RE: Boy with the boot....

So that is your solution???  Negotiate with the criminals???  WOW!!!!  Im hoping you arent thinking about running for office anytime soon, but then someone like you would probably win a commission seat in that city.  The problem in that city and every other city with the same problem is the fact that parents dont care about their kids, so those kids grow into adults who dont care about anything.  The majority are raised watching their parents feed off the government and have ZERO incentive to do anyting for themselves.  If you are someone who has no morals and no ambition and someone is just going to GIVE you something, why would do ANYTHING for yourself.  So these "people" can continue to hangout on the streets until 3 am some drive better cars than us workin' folks and live with ONE of their babies mammas.....then when they DO get arrested the justice system in this county is such a joke, they dont care if they get caught.....

You need not look any further than one of your own commissioners...Deidra Cole has been living off the government (or should I say my OUR tax dollars) for 20 years!!!! and now she is making decisions with the citizens of that citys tax dollars.. this woman can not control and live her own life right, but she is gonna tell you what you ARE GOING to do with YOUR money?????  THERE is your problem...parents and courts and the Federal Government's handouts.....not the schools, not he Police it ALL starts with the parents!!

Anyone who doesn't believe there's gangs in Sandusky has their head in the sand.  As for negotiating, that's real sweet..... like criminals should be brought to a table for a discussions on how to mend their ways and be nice!!!  IT'S TIME TO JAIL THEM FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME INSTEAD OF PUTTING THEM ON PROBATION.  Inforce the laws that are on the books and get rid of the lazy good for nothing judges that allow crimminals to walk our streets once the police arrest them.  usually they are out on bail before the police officers have the paper work done!!!    It use to be you could walk downtown Sandusky at night, stop by the popcorn wagon and buy a bag of popcorn and go sit by the fountain and feed the fish.  Those days have been lost forever ...  They even had to take the origial boy with a boot down and put it in a safe place to keep it from vandles.  No fish because they started killing them... real nice huh?  Thanks judges for your lack of caring .... vote them out and if the next ones don't do their job vote them out.  Problem is.... NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE GET OUT AND VOTE so we keep lazy judges!

Salvatore, my reason for suggesting negotiating with the gangs and/or wannabes is simple. Nothing else has seemed to work so far. Perhaps if the rivals sit down and discuss who is disrespecting them and what they would like done about it, it would make them part of the solution instead of part of the problem. The discussions could be arranged so no one would be accused of being a snitch. It may be the first time some of them have had the opportunity to express themselves non-violently. I am not advocating amnesty or am I saying that this will even work. But given the statements that law enforcement can only react and not act preemptively, it seems like it may be a reasonable alternative to the status quo. I am not a member of law enforcement, the clergy, or any community social actions group with an agenda. I am just a concerned citizen trying to find a solution rather than sit on my duff and gripe.

This getting really out of controll, and now they maybe and yes i said maybe shooting at schools ? well all I say is thank god I dont have children , and to be honest with you , its a good thing ,as one spoke , you touch the child that you brought into the world and you go to jail, thats why there is so much crap and yes i say crap going on in little L.A otherwise formally called Sandusky ohio

These people are making these kids and have no idea how to teach them right from wrong and a good reason is cause they dont have the good sense that god gave them to raise them. All they are really doing for about 90 percent of them is being a baby sitter cause the parents dont wnat them around so they can sleep till noon and then wait for the mail to run so they can get that welfare check .and i am sick of it

Our goverment needs to stop paying these people to make  children when they can not take care of themselves and then lay it off on mr and mrs tax payer .thats whats the matter with this country   and not just the state , Evertime , they need more oney , just have another kid , and up goes your welfare check .Its a shame .Parents should have to prove they are fit before they have a child and if they can not , well then the law can make them work for there money and then see what they say about it , make them get off there butts and make a living weather its washing diches or cleaning toilets , make them earn it .

Now a lot of you may or may not agree with with me , but I have paid my fair share towards raising kids that I dont even know and as far as i can see thats not fair to me

Oy Boy with the boot, why negotiate a truce with the leaders of the Black Point Mafia and Mo Money? What good would that do? They are criminals. Here is part of an earlier Ragister story about the Black Point Mafia and another unnamed gang.

Orzech said the police department has been battling the Black Point Mafia for "four or five years."

A profanity-laced MySpace page that appears to be operated by local members of the Black Point Mafia shows pictures of young men holding guns. It also has pictures of men who claim to be in the gang.

"Next time somebody asks you who you wit, tell em (I'm) wit da mafia," the MySpace page states in part.

Orzech said in addition to the Black Point Mafia, another gang recently popped up on the police department's radar.

"I don't want to name the other one," Orzech said. "The other one, since we just started gathering intelligence on them, we don't want them to know we're looking at them."

Orzech said the department defines a gang as a group of individuals who operate under the same moniker, who have an allegiance to people within their group and commit criminal acts.

The Black Point Mafia, he said, participates in assaults, felonious assaults, narcotics sales and possesses guns.

Why negotiate a truce with somebody participating in assaults, felonious assaults, narcotics and guns? Maybe play patty cake with them? It seems battling the Black Point Mafia for "four or five years" seems a little lengthy. Why the secret about the other gang? Call them out so they will know that they are being watched. I have ideas to get rid of these thugs but the Ragister deletes my comments for racist remartks and personal attacks. I don't see Rufus getting involved at all. Dirty Harry and Charles Bronson could clean up Sandusky in a week to get rid of this trash once and for all.

If these shootings all over town are really about gangs trying to establish their "turf" just like in Cleveland or Chicago or Los Angeles then the police need to treat the situation like they do in those cities. Bring in the leaders of Black Point Mafia and Mo Money and have a sitdown meeting and negotiate a truce. Waiting until an innocent bystander is killed and then arresting one or two bad guys will not end this. I suspect that some of these shootings were done by gang initiates earning their 'colors'. If something is not done soon, someone's innocent child may become the unfortunate bystander.

We really are partially to blame for our own destruction.. we should be picketing, and protesting outside of any courthouse where they keep handing out too lenient sentences..and protesting by forums, and making noise when it is   time for any of these lenient judges come up for re election

we do have power, actually lots of power.. if we keep seeing a disturbing trend of too weak of a punishment, then it should be our mission to remind everyone when it comes time to vote... voting is a very powerful tool.. use it wisely

Sandusky use to be a wonderful little town as many little towns use to be.  It's a sign of the times.  Look around at other small towns and you will see more crime on the rise.  One reason, no dicipline for children anymore.  People are afraid to give the little darlings a good smack on the bottom, and others don't believe in it !  Well, look back at the older generations and see how dicipline (the right way of course) made a difference in how children behaved.  Bad behavior that is not dealt with when little, grows into a huge problem down the road.......  Sandusky has actually been nicknamed "Little Chicago"    As for the public school system........it's a freaken disaster!

This is ridiculous and this has gotten me SO angry. I usually don't ever comment on things, but I have had ENOUGH. I am embarrassed to live here anymore. This town has gone down hill SO much that it's sickening. We have idiots shooting guns and people thinking they're in "gangs."  Why don't you spend a year over in Afghanistan or Iraq and see how gangster you are then? In the meantime, pull your pants up, speak like you're educated, and get a job and stop relying on the government for support if you're more than able to work for yourself! Just a suggestion, Sandusky.

Now, with that being said. what in God's name is with the horrible, disgusting ATTITUDES people have around here? The school systems are terrible. Sandusky High School is NOT a school I would EVER THINK to send my child to. EVER. The teachers and staff DO NOT run that school, THE STUDENTS DO.  Now we have idiots shooting guns!? This town is slowly becoming another Cleveland or Toledo. That is NOT a compliment, either. Whatever happened to feeling safe and having a sense of security? It's hard to feel those two things anymore in this town. What do I have to do, pack up and move out of the city to feel that anymore? Ridiculous. I could say SO much more about this disgusting town but I won't waste any more time. All I have to say is, grow up, Sandusky.
