The city commission unanimously approved a separation agreement this week that will end the career of fire Chief Mike Meinzer.

Meinzer, a 32-year public servant, will remain chief through January, until his paid sick leave expires.
In January, he will officially retire.

The chief will also receive one year's salary, about $81,600, and receive compensation for all his accrued but unused vacation time.

Sandusky can now begin its search for a new fire chief and move toward a new era.

Read Friday's Register for more about what Meinzer's separation means for the city and how the city will move forward with a search for the next chief.

Here is an opportunity for the new Chief to work for less $$$.

Everyones  budget is tight. Pay cuts & benefit reductions need to start at the top.

Perhaps that wouldn’t be the most plausible idea. When bringing forth circumstances of one person...could possibly harm others and bring undue discredit to their families.  There are many people “in the know” and do have specific examples. But, it would be uncouth to hurt others in the process. So, we just voice our humble opinions (sometimes in ridiculous jest) and know that he has won this one.

But, even my friends who served in Afghanistan and Iraq didn’t get this deal when they separated.  Some would contend their jobs were just as dangerous....most would contend their jobs were even more dangerous.

No one knows what goes on behind closed doors.  As for the severance pay, it is only taxpayer money.  I have a feeling we won't be getting replacement windows for the city building anytime soon.

"Gene44870"   no one is denying that he put in devoted work over the years. No one would question that he put his life on the line many times for you and me. That is not the question here but its rather to justify that we owe him somthing more than he and the city agreed to for compensation. I am sure there are lots of employees in the City of Sandusky, Erie County and State of Ohio that are just as devoted and put their lives on the line everyday. Should we not give them the same recognition of their service with a full year's of pay when its not in the agreed to compensation?

As I remember the City of Sandusky has laid off employees and cut positions because they did not have the funds to pay for those jobs. Again, many hard working and devoted employees were placed in a position of working for a job. Does it seem right that given that philosophy of the city that we are now able to compensate any current employee with a full years salary and probably benefits and tell them you do not have to work for it.....alas its a gift for your past service? Just does not make sense and does not give any credibility that the city is trying to save costs.

My point is if the city wants to do this then all and fine BUT for the next year "JUST DO SOMETHING" for the $81,000+ in compensation. Maybe that is stitting a home and reviewing policy, reviewing codes, etc.

This is going to come back to bite the city leadership when it comes time for a raise in fees, raise in taxes, etc. You can't say you are in a financial hardship or trying to balance the city budget when you do these kind of actions. It does sell with folks who pay taxes and expect at least some degree of realistic spending by the city leadership.

To those making accusations, not just toward Meinzer but in general:  Either post specifics or shut up!  You keep talking about corruption everywhere, and I don't deny it exists, but if you know about it and do nothing then your no better than the Officials.  If your speculating, find the truth first!

Good Riddance Meinzer!  If only the PEOPLE were told of all the corruption and favoritism, you would not be able to retire, you would be run out of town.

hey Gard , now wait just a minute , whats wrong for the tax payers paying him that ? I mean he didnt say well i am not going to get paid , so I am not going to fight that fire and save lifes and property , now would that be wrong ? yes it would be , and to tell him that he cant get paid like the contract states is a punch in the face to him for years of  saving peoples lives not to mention risking is own ,He never thought twice about what can happen when he ran in and saved someone , now did he ? SO ITS NOT ONLY PROPER BUT ITS NOT EVN CLOSE TO ENOUGH FOR THE YEARS OF SERVICE , NOT TO MENTION THE HOILDAYS THAT HE WAS AWAY FROM HIS OWN FAMILY ,BEING THERE INCASE SOMENE , A PERFACT STRANGER CALLED HIM FOR HELP .WHAT HE DID IS THE MOST UNSELFISH  THING THAT ANYONE COULD DO FOR THE PERFACT STRANGER .TO BE THERE WHEN AND IF THE TIME OF NEED CAME .

And as far as i can see that really isnt enough money for what he has done for this city for all them years .

I work for a publically owned (stock) company.  If they choose to let me go (permanant layoff) yes, I receive a buyout.  I've over 30 years here.  I agreed back then to work for them under their terms, now they want to call it quits.  They quit, not me.

I work for a small manufacturing company in Sandusky. It is owned by a great family. They are very fair with their employees but I can assure you, they wouldnt give any of us a years salary to not work !  Know why? The money would come out of their pockets and not taxpayers pockets. Its easy to spend other peoples money.

There has to be much more to this whole tangled web than the public knows. We have enough blasphemy going on in publicly traded companies where executives are raping and pillaging their shareholders when they leave. Unfortunately, that is common knowledge, and shareholders should be aware that this could affect their dividends.

However, this money isn’t a quarterly dividend to shareholders who have chosen to invest their money into a company.

This money is our tax dollars. Why don’t people who pay this money (salary and benefits) have any say? Yes, he is a “nice guy”. But, I don’t know that he was extremely effective. So...are we now paying for “nice”?

Yes, there is more to this story. But, apparently we are only obligated to pay money; we are not privileged to information.

We have all heard the plum deals of those in the public sector with jobs. This really give credibility to that. I understand that while he is on sick leave he is exactly that sick and can not work. But this year he is getting $81,000 + do you not think he could do SOMETHING? I mean really is that too much to ask of a public employee to "work" for his salary. To me this is a bit absurd we have folks in this city who pay taxes and for many its not easy paying those taxes. For many they try and make ends meet with what they have and the expect a bit of realism from the folks who spend the money in the City of Sandusky.

Is it too much to ask that for this $81,000+ he could not put in a regular work day and week and if nothing else sit at the fire station while everyone is out on call and "just watch the place." Is that really too much to ask of a person who is getting this kind of compensation which INCLUDES the city paying his retirement and who knows health care too..............I seriously doubt the $81,000 + is the base figure.

I wonder how many who live in Sandusky have a sweet deal like this from their employer?  Does Walmart to this or Meijer, or JC Penney or Sears, etc. you name it for their employees. For sure they don't. So the question comes.... WHY SHOULD WE????
