Jason's Mailbag: Annoying barking dogs
PERKINS

Q: I live in Perkins but our friends in Sandusky have the same problem — barking dogs. Last summer, our neighbors would come home from work, leave their dogs out and they would bark at anything and everything well into the night -- you can hear them all over the neighborhood. Even when they're home, the owners seem oblivious to the noise. I am looking forward to the warmer weather but not the barking. Can anything be done? — Bob of Fairview Lanes

A: Hello Bob! Great question. Barking dogs can be quite annoying, especially if they keep you up at night! I called Barb Knapp, who is the Erie County dog warden, and she directed me to the Perkins Police Department because barking dogs is categorized as a noise complaint.  When I called the Perkins Police Department, an officer there informed me that you can call the police to make a noise complaint. From there they would go to the homeowner's house and let them know about the complaint and tell them to put the dogs inside. If there is any questionable activity going on concerning the dogs' well-being, police would contact Knapp to come evaluate the dogs' living conditions. Also, if the problem persists, police can issue a citation to the homeowner. Before you go that route, however, you might want to consider talking to your neighbor when the situation occurs. Invite them over to your house so they can hear the dogs barking for themselves. Perhaps they're oblivious because they turn their hearing aids down, or perhaps they have loud music on inside the house and can't hear the dogs barking. You might also consider talking to them about bark collars or other devices that can help keep the noise down in their yard. If they don't have the money to buy one, but are open to the idea, perhaps you could buy a bark collar and give it to them. This neighborly gesture might give you the peace and quiet you seek. Good luck!

Even liberals would be glad you had any amount or type of guns to make you feel secure in exchange for getting rid of a constantly barking dog.

The ones that bark at everything are not helpful at all. In an emergency the neighbors will not think anything of the barking dogs. They will also drown out any commotion going on. And the breeds of dogs that constantly bark just do that...bark. They are never loyal or intelligent enough to attack. Also you will never bother to check what the dogs are barking at if they bark constantly.

Dogs that constantly bark are dogs that are not properly taken care of and are bored.  These are dogs that do not get enough interaction and exercise from their humans.  They are owned by people who should not be allowed to have animals.   For those of you who think the dogs should be shot, eaten or not treated like one of the family - I feel sorry for you.  My animals are my family and are treated as such.

I live in a neighborhood where just about everybody on the street owns a dog or two. Only difference compared to these other comments --- their OWNERS are responsible people. They don't let their dogs out 24-7 tied to a doghouse. What kind of life is that for a dog, anyway? I think that's animal cruelty in itself.

Good morning everyone... I agree with By and by...  I would take the barking dogs over the brats any day of the week.

We also have the braty kids on our street  that are out till 11 or 12 . I thought there was a curfew?

OK  Getting back to the dogs. We have a couple nieghbors that keep there dogs out in the elements all the time.. It's no wonder why they are barking. They can't see overr the privicy fence. No one shows them any attention, except for feeding & Watering time.. Why can't these folks that own these dogs, bring them in the house?

My dog is a german Shepard, and she is in the house all the time. She has never had to stay outside. Hell, I don't even own a dog house... Being there is no need for one.

As for her barking, she is not a constant barker. When she starts her barking , then I know someone is in my yard. So, of you don't want to hear the barking ... stay out of my yard.

There  are different remedies for a barking dog... for those interested, go talk to nick ( I believe his name is) Down at the K-9 training center. On Columbus Ave.

I'm with you kimberlin2010!

I would take a barking dog over these BRATS that most parents think are angels! I have a group on my street that are destructive, LOUD, aggressive (at age 7), and out till 11-12 at night.

If my dog barks at you>get your butt OFF MY PROPERTY!

To the person who said to poison the dog>you are disgusting and probably breeding serial killers!

Years ago I asked a neighbor to try to keep their dog quit. Even offered suggestions. The guy beat the dog so bad for barking it later died from its injuries. So no, I no longer complain about barking dogs.

We put entireltoo much "value" on dogs in the United States because they make us feel "loved". They eat them in China and other countries. Kick a dog and he will come back to you. Kick a cat and you'll never see it again. Which one it smarter? And the neighborly route and suggestion of a bark collar? The idiot I had the displeasure to deal with said, "Maybe I should buy you a bark collar". Anymore, I just call the cops...$62 fine after the third time.

If I had a neighbor whose dogs bark constantly, I'd be more than a little annoyed! I DO have a neighbor who lets several kids run up and down the sidewalk screaming at the top of their lungs, pull up flowers in neighborhood yards, shake trees until leaves fall from them, and scare squirrels, birds, and cats — loudly! — on a continuous basis, so I sympathize with Kimberlin2010's remarks as well.

But if I had a neighbor (like Kimberlin2010 says he is) with dogs that only barked when people were messing with the fence, or strangers were approaching the front porch, I'd personally be thrilled. I don't have the time or yard for a big dog, but whatever else anyone may say, Kimberlin's right about one more thing: Dogs can offer GREAT security! And yeah, in this day and age, in this city, it couldn't hurt,

Bottom line: While Kimberlin's words may have been deliberately taken out of context, mine shouldn't be since I'm going to be entirely clear. If I have to choose, I'd take the loud dogs over the loud and DESTRUCTIVE kids any day of the week! The dogs, at least, are confined to their own yard.

I have a suggestion. Record all that barking and play it back to the neighbors at 3 AM in the morning with loud speakers perhaps?

If some human being would go out and making all that noise, they would be arrested and thrown into jail.

Or play your stereo or rap music too loud and you get a citation.

Sorry kimberlin2010 but it looks like you are on your own with this subject. Barking dogs are just like car stereos that are played to loud. At least the car is here and gone, but dogs can go on for hours. I had a neighbor who kept hound dogs. It was terrible. I did talk to him, but it seems some people just don't get the fact that all people don't feel about dogs like they do. I know someone who works nights and their neighbor lets his dogs out during the day. Some days, this person gets very little sleep. And yes, they have talked to them to, but nothing happens. I agree, it's just plan rude. But then it is a "me" world.

We've got a neighbor who lets her dog out early every weekend mornning.  The dog barks for hours and hours on end -- at other dogs, at cars, at squirrels, etc.  Multiple people have talked to the owners and asked them to correct the problem.  They refuse.  They say that they let the dog outside when they've had too much barking inside. It isn't security. It is insensitive and rude.

and btw... my dogs are VERY well trained.  Because they bark do not make them not  trained.  My dogs bark at strangers and kids through a very large privacy fence.  Half the time getting screwed with to cause them to bark.  As far as im concerned....  if your that close to my fence to make them bark.... im not yelling at them.  sorry.

haha wow twisting words a bit much.  i did not say dogs are no different than children. Im simply saying what exactly counts as noise?  15 kids playing and screaming?   And no i do not own poodles haha.  My family busts our asses off to get the things that we have.  Ill be damned if im gonna make it easy for these crack heads to break in and take it from me.  Dogs do provide as good security for homes.  Sorry a blanket is not needed funny guy.

Dog owners like kimberlin are a great example of how bad things have gotten.

Dogs are security. Maybe he could just get a blanket, like Linus?

To him, dogs are no different than children.

Yeah, I could see how the conversation his neighbor would have with him would go.

Joker obviously knows the type, too.

Just go ahead and call, call and call the police.

You aren't going to make any sense to him or any of the other boors who think a barking dog is a constituent of a nice neighborhood.

I'll bet kimberlin's dogs are Yorkies or Poodles, right?

Maybe if you know someone with a CCW who has a desire to go into bars and not drink, just so he can surreptiously possess a gun, could be helpful here.

Show the CCW the nuisance the dogs are.

Maybe, as a public service, he will go over there and silence the dogs once and for all.

BobK has a very salient comment, as well.

Allowing your dogs to bark their fool heads off isn't security, it's rude.  If you're going to have a pet take one hour a week for six weeks to goto obedience school and train your dog to know that you are the alpha and to obey you.  I agree to talk to your neighbor but if you have neighbors like I do you're probably going to continue to have the same problem with the added bonus of your neighbor being an (expletive) til the end of time.

I personally do not yell at my dogs for barking alot of the times.  The way times are nowadays between robberies, shootings, etc.   My dogs are security.  To me it is no different then a bunch of kids playing in the backyard making noise throughout the day.   And bothering police over something like this, when there is shootings and robberies going on seems silly.   I do agree on not leaving your dogs outside overnight to bark throughout the night.  I have a doggie door and they help themselves throughout the day.  But it gets closed at night.  Anyways just my opinion.
