The jack-in-the-box outside Happy Jack's Toy Factory pops up, scaring passersby at Cedar Point's Halloweekends.
Perkins Twp.

A pleasantly warm October elevated Erie County's sales tax revenue to $1.02 million that month, although Cedar Point's HalloWeekends no doubt played an added role in the gains.

The October 2011 collection, calculated in January, is about $86,000 more than sales tax income in October 2010. It represents about a 9 percent increase.

The new data only continues a positive trend for Erie County’s sales tax revenue. County commissioner Bill Monaghan said commissioners plan to use some of the revenue for technology upgrades.

"We want to upgrade computers and start looking at a fiber network so we can teleconference," Monaghan said.

sfoley....that is a great idea..I love twinkling lights.  I can imagine a cool New Years dance at CP.  That would be really nice with all those lights.  I love the Santa's workshop idea as well.  You have some great ideas there.  And yes, they should consider keeping some rooms open as well.  Wow, great insight.  Way to be positive!!!!

And yes, they do a great deal of work on rides at CP over the winter, but if they were going to open a small section of the park for the winter, would it be so hard to move things around for awhile to accommodate more winter things knowing the revenue it could generate? Sometimes you have to be flexible to make money, and make things work.  Just a thought.

to livin on the lake...that is very true, CP is not the only thing here, but it is a BIG attraction and we should be utilizing it far more than we are.  Let's face it.  Kalahari and the other water parks are fun and fine and are a draw, but CP has been a bigger draw for far longer and a NAME attraction to this area for some time now.  We should be thanking them a little more and "condemning" them a little less than we do.  They pay a big share of the revenue and we should acknowledge that as well as we do the other attractions.  We should not bite the hand of ANY of them that feeds the people of this community...barr none!!!   Perhaps adding some winter action to CP would increase the reveune even more was my only point and if CP were willing, we should be willing to assist them in their efforts.  They have been giving MANY of the people of this area their "first" jobs for years.  Perhaps they could hire even more people over the winter months instead of high school and college kids.  That was all I was saying.

I see you agreed that it wasn't a bad idea,  I thank you for that.

LIVIN  , read the story one more time, it says  " cedar point no doubt played an ADDED roll in the gain " not that it played a sole roll.

Maybe some of the money can be used to bring the County Clerk's office into the 21st century. Of course they will have to start in the 20th century and move forward.

Why would tax revenues be up just because of Halloweekends? They are only on the weekends. What about other big ticket attractions like Kalahari & Great Wolf, plus early Christmas shopping at all the retailers and mall? Nah...couldn't be that. Has to be Cedar Point.

I'm not hating on CP, they are very, very good for our area, but the Register needs to realize they're not the only thing good for our area. Times have changed.

Time to raise the Admissions Tax!    Maybe some of that revenue could go towards upgrades to the Computer System @ the SPD, as well the many messed up streets throughout the city.

I think it would be a great idea for them to do some sort of winter events; they could limit them to the frontier trail, where they currently do the Starlight Experience; they could turn the Starlight into a Holiday Display of lights.  Maybe even use some of the buildings to portray Santa's workshop, etc.  I would, without a doubt, drive up from Pittsburgh to experience it every year.  It would also be nice if they would keep a limited amount of rooms open during the winter, on the weekends- even if they used just the Bonair Section, or Breakers main section; could you imagine going and spending New Years Eve  up there? New Years eve, at twighlight, walking through the holiday light display, then going to a party at TGI Fridays, and safely go back to your room afterwords.  That park and the resorts certainly have potential beyond their regular operating season.

On the off time it is like a little city inside the park. the midway becomes kinda  like a 2 way street with trucks coming and going, some of the rides come apart and are stored on the ground, alot of construction of all kinds from outside contractors going on all over the park. they turn the shelter houses in the front of the park into work shops. most peaple have no idea how much work gos on year round. But it is a great idea if they could make it work with some kind of event in the winter.

I can see why.  Ever try to park over there during those events?  WOW!  NO WAY   People seem to LOVE those weekend.  I wonder how popular winter events would be?  Say ice skating or sledding events?  I bet they would draw crowds just as well.  CP should try something for the winter.  They don't have to use the entire park, just the midway up to the last part of the overhead ride and incorporate the games.

It might be a draw and increase even more capital.  CP and these water parks are about all the draw we have around here and we might just as well get on the bandwagon and start using them as much as we can to make the most of it.  A little less complaining and a little more encouragement might be in order.

Perhaps CP could consider hiring people who need jobs around here for the winter seasons and the October seasons.  That isn't any worse than the contractors work is it?  They lay off in the winter.
