Coroner: Inmate died from blood clot
Perkins Twp.

Coroners have determined the death of a  47-year-old Vermilion man on Tuesday morning in the Erie County jail was a result of natural causes.

An autopsy revealed Robert Baswell Jr. died after a blood clot deep in his left calf broke loose and entered his lungs.

Baswell was arrested Oct. 17 after police say he attempted to rob a Vermilion internet cafe. He was charged with theft, possessing criminal tools and and robbery.

Deputies found Baswell blue and unresponsive in his cell at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday. Paramedics attempted to revive Baswell, but could not.

Baswell had been taken to the hospital four times since Jan. 25, when he fell in the shower at the jail, deputies said. He had two CAT scans performed, but doctors did not find anything that would warrant him being admitted for treatment.

isn't that sad......it takes a doctor to say you are dead but anyone can tell it..!!!  Usually when you don't have a heart beat and are not breathing, its a pretty good bet you are dead.  That's all the doctors check too!

the cops did NOTHING wrong, here.  They should be applauded for what they did to help this man.  The others however, I still have DEEEP reservations about and if you ever want, Taxpayer, to get together and discuss this I would be happy to accomodate you, as we do not see eye to eye on the rest of it.

To sash......

the article said this man hit is head and that he was showing signs of problems.  The said the CT scan "showed nothing".  Either the article lied or that was a mis-statement.  If he had MS it should have showed up is what I meant....nothing more than that.  I know what it takes to deliver a diagnosis of MS.

And yes, it should have been something they considered.  Yes..for your information there is ONE blood test that can indicate a blood clot and they should have performed it in a simple head hitting fall, especially since the guy had MS.Sorry, but just because you don't know about it does not mean it does not exist. It does.

I have nothing be PRAISE for the police in this matter.  They did exactly what they should have done.  It is the doctors I have a problem with and apparently I am the only one willing to stand up for what I believe against a bunch of doctors and a hospital I believe are substandard for an area this size.

I am sorry, but have you ever lived ANYWHERE but Sandusky?

Your not leagally dead until pronounced so by a doctor. That was probably done at the hospital.

how come the autopsy states he died in the hospital and not the jail?

Thanks...took the words right out of my mouth.  Even if they did see MS lesions on the CT scan this guy probably would not have been admitted for MS since it is a chronic condition which alone does not lead to death. A blood test called a D-Dimer can be done to check for the presence of a blood clot, however there are conditions besides a thrombosis where this can be elevated including old age, trama, CA, and inflammation.  We will never know what exactly occured in the ER or at urgent care since medical records are not public.  I agree...cut the Docs and ECSO some slack.

@wiredmama- The docs didn't necessarily miss anything on scans. Not all MS patients have brain lesions, and the ones that do develop are often deep tissue and/or found on the spinal column- not as apparent on a CT as with a MRI. Also, if a lesion was found, that would not have meant a diagnosis of MS. There are alot of conditions which can result in a lesion. MS can't be diagnosed by one test. It ususally takes a series of tests, eliminating other possible causes. And though I know there are conditions that can increase the likelihood of bloodclots, I've never heard of a simple blood test that could predict one. Let's cut the doctors and the Sheriff's Dept. some slack.

hmmm had nothing to do with his fall.  I suspected as much.  Now where are all those that were trashing the Sheriff's dept as well as FRMC and NOMS?

My prayers, too, are with his family.  After ready the preliminary autopsy,I would have thought they would have found a brain bleed but they didn't.  Instead they found MS.  I am shocked that the docs at FRMC and NOMS thru their CT scans missed his MS and didn't do a simple blood test to show potential blood clot problems done routinely with falls and head injury.  That would have shown the DVT.  This guy probably died instantly. That's how it happens.

I don't blame you, Margaritaveille88.  Anyone who has known anyone who died of DVT knows how fast you can go with it.

A stitch in time saves nine, and this guy had a real problem.  Too bad the stitch was missed.

I once worked with a guy and he had the same thing. He was actually dead for a minute but he is ok now with compression socks, meds, etc. This stuff is very scary and usually NO symptoms.  Having a serious leg injury myself, it is always in the back of my mind.  Prayers to the Family
