Coming soon: Firelands Regional Medical Center Stadium
Sep 02
2011
Firelands Regional Medical Center's name will be on more than just the hospital for years to come.
The local hospital contributed thousands of dollars to acquire naming rights for the field and stadium belonging to Perkins High School.
Final figures are unknown at this time.
The hospital's donations contributed to Perkins overall goal of securing $1.7 million to open the stadium by Aug. 31 next year — the school's opening football game against Sandusky High School.

Informed, I don't know. Private schools generally are harder to get into; though I'll agree that Miami doesn't take anyone with a pulse, I have my doubts about OSU, BG, Kent, etc. I'll admit that there are some private schools that are only exclusive because they want to remain small with less emphasis on prestige. In Ohio, those types of private schools are few (John Carroll '09, '12G here). Honestly, had I thought my post out better, I would have definitely toned it down, and I apologize. Bucsfan, in my opinion, was becoming to ridiculous and petty to ignore, and I let it aggravate me.

To tt, I'm not sure where you get the idea that private colleges are harder to get into than public. Yes, many public universities in Ohio are very open, others are very selective. OSU no longer takes anyone with a pulse--they have really umped the ante on their admissions requirements. Miami U is pretty selective as well. On the other hand, while some private schools like Case Western and Kenyon are very selective, there are many private schools that have very minimal admission requirements.

Funny, I was at the game & we were saying how much we liked their shirts and thought it was great that they switched to shorts when they weren't playing. They were far more comfortable than our kids were. The bands joined to play The National Anthem and both bands put on a great halftime show. I hate to break it to you, but there really isn't any animosity between the bands at least on the Perkins side. I'm not sure about Sandusky but I saw kids from both bands hanging out together. They sure didn't seem to have a problem.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Perkins Schools has what they want to do in the classroom covered, promised, or still in discussion. The stadium, I think, is FRMC's way, as a participant in Perkins' STEM movement, of getting their name more heavily involved in the Perkins community overall.

This is great for the students of Perkins Schools! However, given Perkins High Schools move toward becoming a STEM School, I think the money would be better utilized by updating the science labs.

As to your comment about the football team, both sandusky and perkins have had wins. If I recall, two years ago we beat sandusky at the Hometown showdown at sandusky let's see........ 32-0 so I think we both have had our years!! As to the comment about your so called education, as I see you have several writing mistakes in your comment, we have numerous education scholarships every year we were in an Excellent rating now an Effective rating but as I see, sandusky is in an needs improvement rating!!!! So I think that we both have our strong points and our weak points you you sir, CAN TAKE A CHILL PILL!!!!!!!

Reading your post gives me a headache. Your only concession to punctuation is a curious double comma, the whole thing is a run-on paragraph, and you seem to think that using "to be" conjugations is something other people do (which by itself tells me quite a bit about the author). I'm glad that you won't be sending your children to a school system like Perkins; if this post by their parent is any indication of their abilities, the Perkins teaching staff would have their work cut out for them, thanks to what passes for a Sandusky education these days.
Band and sports are both categorized as extracurricular activities, meaning they're extraneous to an institution's role as community educator. Lots of people in both Sandusky and Perkins have lost sight of that, unfortunately. However, the Ohio State Report Cards for the schools says Sandusky is spending another year in Continuous Improvement, while Perkins has fallen from its Excellent spot to Effective. Effective is still better than Continuous Improvement, and before you should remember the prodigious influx of students into Perkins from neighboring districts these last two years.
What do you consider "better" when looking at the scholarship roles? More handed out, more money, what the scholarships are for? Apparently the scholarship situation at Sandusky isn't so satisfactory. If I remember right, a certain group of people at ol' SHS were trying to give the BB coach the boot over a perceived deficit of scholarship money coming to Sandusky players, as if it was entirely the coach's fault. You're bragging about how many people go to a big school (especially just for sports)? Of course OSU's a big school: they take anybody with a pulse, just like every other public school in Ohio. What do you think would happen if you measured success by academics, such as what rate of students made it into the private schools, more academically exclusive and demanding?

Re: bucsfan98
As evidenced by YOUR post, it appears that Sandusky has done some "slammin' " of Perkins both now and in the past. Remember when Perkins was mostly an agricultural development? Perkins took the insults ten and they still take them. Insults have flown both ways and believe me, the SR's spin on consolidation is not helping the situation at all.
As for you never attending the Perkins Schools system, that is your decision and you should stick to it. However, not everyone at Sandusky (or Perkins, for that matter) will have their children attend their alma mater. Hence, the influx of students into one school district and a reduction in another.
Being in the OSU band does not make you a superior musician, but it does mean you are physically fit to stand the practices and that you can hold your own musically. Yes, Perkins has had students in the OSU band and the UC band that I immediately can remember. Our childrens' accomplishments should not be thrown around as weight in any battle. In God's eyes (as well as many Christians), they are all great!!
To the Sandusky Register:
Is there anyone in your office that has considered that the open enrollment response indicates that a number of parents are not happy with either the Sandusky City Schools or the Perkins Schools? There is a definite reason that parents send their children to one system over another. That is the reason, pure and simple, that the consolidation of the two school systems is opposed.
If you let the numbers speak for themselves, the indication is that parents are not totally pleased with the Sandusky City Schools. Believe me, it is not the teachers or administrators that have created the shift. The parents who send their children out of the city school system are looking for a safe environment where respect is modeled by both the adults AND peers in attendance with their children.

Gee, Sandusky's waterfront! What fun! I think I'll go down there now! Ok, first I have to notify my next of kin, then I have to get on my kevlar vest...ok, now I'll have to find a safe-looking place to park so my vehicle doesn't get broken into, and now, I can choose which part of the waterfront I want to view! Should I go to Jackson Street Pier, where I can gaze at the lovely coal docks and Cedar Point, or should I go down to Shoreline Park, where I can gaze at Cedar Point and the lovely coal docks,? Maybe I'll head to Battery Park, where the waterfront is obstructed almost entirely by trees. What fun!
Afterward, maybe I can dine at a bistro-type restaurant that's out of everyone's price range or at a dive outside of which I'll get my head kicked in. Or I can do some waterfront shopping at...at...er, nevermind.

Brick - appreciate the comments. I have never regretted getting a college degree, actually have a Masters Degree as well and paid for it all. Now paying for my kids college education and the debt keeps getting higher. Blacktigress must not know anything about that kind of stuff and is probably envious of my place on Lake Erie. Sometimes people like that can't see forest because the trees are blocking their view or they just prefer to go down to the County Human Services building every week for the freebie handout. Keep up the hard work Brick.

Its called Firelands Regional Medical Center for a reason, It serves a large geographical area that includes Sandusky and Perkins Twp. It has nothing to do with not wanting to have anything to do with Sandusky, blah, blah, etc. It is good public relations, and they are Erie County's largest employer and draw people from all over the county. Whats wrong with wanting to give back to a school that needs some help? Also, you Perkins people, don't get too full of yourselves, Sandusky has one thing you will never have- a waterfront.

Living on the Lake- congrats for your hard work and college education. I am sure it took a lot of time and effort to be able to afford the things that you must afford since you have a sign on name like "living on the lake." Blacktigress must be rich too with a sign on name like that. She must own a lot of black tigers, those have to be expensive. The uneducated will never understand what it is like to go to college and earn something with all the handouts available. When I finished college I had a $130,000 loan to pay back, so I got a job and will be paying on it until it is paid back. If I have money to donate to Perkins then that is my choice to do so. To critisize someone that has the ability to donate is laughable. The worst part is 40% of my income goes to the govrenment for taxes so the blacktigress can get the handouts and sit around and complain that the educated exploit the poor. It is your choice to be the educated or to be the uneducated, don't hate the ones that made the right choice.
Living on the Lake- I hope your house on the lake is big and beautiful and you have a great view, because you probably worked hard for it and deserve it.

LivinOnTheLake says
Blacktigress - are you like, 12 years old or something? Critcizing me for HAVING a college education? Sheesh...you must be one miserable person. You know, just because you don't have a college degree really isn't my fault, its more like its YOUR fault. If someone wants to go to college nowadays, they can, regardless of their financial position in life. Next time, try to criticize someone because you were too LAZY to elevate your self from the gutter. Also, having a degree from Ohio State does NOT guarantee one a lifetime of cash flowing over the brim of a cup. See, how it works is ultimately, one has to work hard and smart to get to where one wants to get in life. Apparently, you feel that someone will knock on your door and offer you prosperity. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
Okay, now Blacktigress can go back to your miserable life and complain about anything positive in this area.

Seems to me thousands of dollars could be a very small drop in the bucket of a $1.7 million project. I notice that it didn't say tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, just thousands.
Amazes me that people complain when schools want to spend money on sports facilities, then complain when they get private donations instead of spending taxpayer money. Doesn't this just free up more money for the schools to spend on education? Seems like a win / win situation to me. I suppose it just comes down to some people not being happy no matter what you do.

Well let's see, SHS has their Earl Bruce, Orlando Pace and CP. Perkins managed to lassoo FRMC, Mr. Kasper and Mr. Hartung, for starters.
Have spent thousands of out-of-pocket $$$$'s that went to FRMC since 1986 to present. Heck, we didn't own our 3 children until the youngest was 12 (no health-care coverage at the time), just in time to start paying for sports injuries. From 99-2008, paid many a $ for services rendered for sports injuries for student-athletes @ Perkins. It's all a risk, one they deemed worth taking. Let's see, stitches, messed up shoulder, knee surgery, rehabilitation, intravenous antibiotics for staff infection, x-rays, radiologists, surgeons, heart specialists, radiologists, ER docs, ER room, ortho, elbow injuries.........they don't run cheap. I figure we've paid enough that our names should be on that stadium! JUST KIDDING! It was all well worth it. Then again, maybe I should've tried to talk the boys into playing tennis, or golf, less chance of a serious injury, such as surgery for replacement of knee ligaments and tendons, shoulders, elbows, broken collar bones, concussions, dehydration......the list goes on! Nice part, school insurance did help! Thanks Perkins, Mr. Strohl, FRMC, Mr. Stark and Board, Mr. Kasper, Mr. Hartung, and whoever else may be the BIG PRIVATE $$$ contributors! Just goes to show ya, where there is a will, there is a way. And don't tell me we don't need a new Track and Field. Anyone who has spent any time in the stadium, on the track n field knows that!
How many of you folks were at the press conference to listen to the folks speaking, and the period of time this funding would cover? Everyone cried "seek private donations", they did, give em credit for that! Now, I'll personally donate 1/25 of that $25K check they were taking pictures of, and will set up a payment plan to do just that. Kinda like I've done over the last 25 yrs. w/FRMC and every other medical caregiver/specialist used, heck, all the way to the Cleveland Clinc, to pay back our debts, even if it was only $25 a month. Make a payment, they won't turn ya over to collection. Ignore them, they will.
By the by, FRMC employee's are paid through Direct Deposit and have been for quite sometime. Have a relative who has been through all the mergers, is a 35+ yrs. employee, and has NEVER ONCE received their payroll late! Maybe they're like my PRIVATE employer, leave there w/o a two-week notice, or not on good terms, don't plan on walking out w'your check in hand, let alone any vacation time you may have coming. It's called Company Policy!
P.S. Looking forward most of all to not only FB and Track in this new stadium, but also just maybe they can get the Cancer Walk back! Lord knows we have enough within the REGION of Erie County and surrounding counties that suffer from such a debilitating disease!

Perkins Schools did a great thing by seeking private funds to help fund a project of this sorts. This is what taxpayers across the area have asked them to do, and they did it. Now some have the nerve to criticize it. What an awkward opinion TrueBlue. Extracurricular activities are big part of any school system, it is outstanding that Perkins, Huron, and Sandusky have all asked and recieved help from the private sector. Great job saving as many tax dollars as you could in all 3 communities. Also True Blue, I beleive you referring to consolidation of schools. PLEASE do some research on this topic and you will clearly see that it is not effective and doesn't save significant money for taxpayers. For all you that think school consolidation across this region will save money, think again. And many of you aren't even looking at the educational impact of large schools. Clearly, research points to the fact that cost savings are minimal and in some researched cases the operation costs increased costing taxpayers even more. Just take some time and look at the research all you that want area schools to consolidate, it is right there for you to read. I love that fact that all our local communities have thier own identity and school districts. It is what makes living in this area great. I support all the schools whether Bellevue, Sandusky, Huron, Perkins, Margaretta, or Edison. I think all the schools do great things for kids. Do some research bloggers, please. I'm not a school expert, but I do research before I offer an opinion on any subject.

A few bloggers don't to see the big picture, (not surpised). As mentioned in an earlier post, go in any direction outside of Sandusky and you witness other healthcare providers plastered all over stadiums. Also did some research, hosipitals across the nation have worked with high schools in providing this type of support. Great job Firelands! You are hearing some of the same things that Cedar Point and Kalahari heard. Remember, no good deed goes unpunished. Congratulations Perkins on the start to your project. Visited your stadium as a spectator last year and it undoubtedly has some serious needs.

YOU PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT OBAMA HEALTHCARE AND SUPPORT THIS CRAP???
What we have here are two types of people.
1st. Those who can afford Ohio State Degrees which means money flowing over the lip of the cup, heck, they have so much money their sign in name is LIVING ON THE LAKE !
2nd. Those who are barely making it and some not making it. Some loosing their homes BECAUSE OF FRMC EXCESSIVE CHARGES and Med Care's micro management to not pay without a fight attitude on EVERYTHING THAT IS SUBMITTED. Then we wonder why the poorer people vote democratically and for socialist programs, you conservatives are FOOLS when it comes to PR.
The first type of person hinks its ok to overcharge patients and then thumb their nose to those who can't afford healthcare and is sacrificing when their children need help by buying a football field !
The second type of person feels like the meds were given to them rectally with a size 12 shoe.
As to Med Mutual, the WORSE INSURANCE company there is for paying necessary health care is applauded for spending money that they fought not to pay to its insurers? I hear the stories all the time about this insurance group, people coming in with heart attacks and strokes and Med says they can't stay in the hospital, NO WONDER THEY CAN CONTRIBUTE!
And how foolish is it when someone compares Kalahari's contribution to Firelands. Ever see someone need Kalahari in order to LIVE? If FRMC has this much excess money to waist then they are thieves. A hospital is a NECESSITY, not a pool to hang out at for those who can afford it. It just figures the one living on the lake would be so calloused, probably a doctor since he lives on the lake.

"Retiree" = no one is interested nor do they care that FRMC doesn't have any "unions". If you haven't been paying attention, those pesky little things are a thing of the past. Only people making money in a union are the union bosses.
Regarding FRMC's sponsorship of Perkins' stadium. I think this goes with the flow. Kalahari supported Huron's field turf installation, Cedar Point did Sandusky's, and now the third member of the three largest employers in the county will have their own field named after them. People, this is ALL about marketing.
I applaud FRMC for not being a parochial thinking institution. People around here need to learn that private businesses do NOT see political boundaries, like ciity limit signs. FRMC is a regional player that just so happens to be located within the Sandusky city limits, however, FRMC does not see themselves as just a "Sandusky" business. It's reach is so much more than that. Some of you folks ought to see the big picture instead of worrying about whether you are from Perkins, Margaretta, Castalia, Sandusky, Huron or Milan. Your all ACTUALLY all residients of Erie County.

The reporter on this story failed to inform us just how much money Firelands spent on their creative advertisement. Could the hospital be operating in a gray area when it comes to advertisement? The whole situation gives Firelands a black eye considering the nation's health care situation and for the fact they accept government money for those who cannot pay their bills. Hospitals are going out of business because they cannot stay a float and Firelands is going public with their irresponsibility. If Firelands has money to burn, it could have went for a real need in the community instead of a football stadium.
01:16 AM
notfromhere says
If the money is to be spent, use it wisely. The whole stadium should be rotated clockwise 90 degrees, with the softball field re-located to the east side. The football field would run North-South, the players don't play directly into the sunset, and the fans will enjoy the 'home field advantage'. If this concept is not understood, ask any one that was at Strobel field (visitors side) for the game Friday evening.
10:29 PM
Informed says
This is so wrong on so many levels. And no, I am not jealous, that is a stupid thing to say. This is a perfect example of what is wrong with the healthcare system in this country. Hospitals should not have millions of money to spend on something this frivolous. That money could be put to so much better use--charities that provide healthcare for those in need, Ronald McDonald House, medical research, employee raises, back into the hospital to reduce rates/fees, etc. If they have this much money for something like this, then they are charging way too much! I'm all for Perkins getting new facilities from business donations, but I don't feel that a hospital is an appropriate "business" to be doing this, especially this amount of money.
