The Mailbag: Question about U.S. 250 traffic procedure
Perkins Twp.

Q: Is it legal to go straight from the traffic light on Rt. 250 and the corner Pier 1 is on?  The painted lines have a right turn to head South on Rt. 250 and a left turn onto Rt. 250 to head North. If you want to go straight to the plaza area with Kohls, which lane is correct?  — Thanks, Sharon on Cold Creek Blvd.

A: This is a tricky question Sharon. I called over to the Perkins Township Police Department and talked to Lt. Ed Hastings about this. He said if the lanes aren't properly marked with an arrow to go straight, choosing to go straight from the right lane would probably be safest. You other option is to turn onto U.S. 250, then go into the next entrance into the plaza you want to visit. For example, if you turn left onto U.S. 250 from Crossings Road (next to Panera Bread) you can get into the right lane and turn into the Lowe's plaza at the entrance near Fazoli's or Toys-R-Us. It takes you a little out of your way, but with the high traffic on U.S. 250 you want to make sure however you cross the road you do it safely.

Common sense tells you to use the right lane.  The real problem is the morons who fail to use a turn signal.  I also find it annoying when people turn onto a four lane road that they fail to turn into the NEAREST lane to them.  Meaning, if you're turning left, you turn into the left lane of the four lane road.  Opposite action is required when turning right.  It's a law that needs to be enforced more often as people tend to go where ever the hell they want.  I'm the guy who cuts you off in the parking lots when you're speeding through parking spaces while I'm going CORRECTLY up and down the aisles.  If you hit me, I will sue and win.

They should just add a straight arrow on to the right turn arrow so it could be either, like most stops are.

When you are exiting the Lowe's parking lot you are on pivate property (not a city street.)  When this property was painted there was no road on the other side of the intersection so it was painted with left and right only since those were the choices at the time.

The county property website shows the owners and mailing address as:

PARK PLACE ENTERPRISES LTD
PO BOX 25965
SHAWNEE MISSION KS 66225-5965

Attempt to direct your request for change there.

Great question Shar-bear!  I've been asked by alot of people on what to do there.  In fact, I got into a wreck in front of there because someone turned left in front of me.  I was ok though (thanks for asking).

I've wondered the same thing.  If you are coming from the opposite direction at the same traffic light, there is an arrow to go straight or turn right.  But if you are at the Mall at the light by McDonalds, if you want to go straight across to AAA or Famous Recipe, you use the left turn lane.  Typical government, no logic and no consistency!

Good question Sharon!  The arrows at the other end in front of Lowes are the same, you can't drive straight to go to Lowes.  The shopping center should repaint those arrows so we all can quit being lawbreakers.
