Perkins Twp.

A 13-year-old girl who attends Briar Middle School has been suspended for 10 days after she took a knife to school Thursday, according to a Perkins Police report.

The girl, who had been sending email back and forth with another student, told authorities she was “tired of being bullied.” When she came to school Thursday, “a small black handled folding knife with a serrated blade was found inside her laptop case,” the report said.

Sometimes they just don't care. OR the kids don't report it; it doens't always have to be on the teachers.

4.9 this year locks it in through 2015, if it doesn't pass there will be a 6.5 next year and probably every year after that... 4.9 is a deal by any district's standards.

Let's see, pass a 4.9 now and get a brand new state of the art campus now that increases my property value by 25%, or pass a 6.5 next year to buy new trailers...yes trailers ...and to clean up the mold and dampness outa the walls at Furry that does nothing for my property value.

On a personal note, I find it embarassing that we have kids who have to have class IN a trailer because there is no room for the students (with or without open enrollment, they've been there many years before open enrollment)... it's embarassing, have some class and get them in classrooms.

it is very scary to me that people have no idea what they are supporting. nowhere does it say there is 40 million dollars in stimulus funds to match the 4'9 mills it was stated that that there is POTENTIAL

savings of interest on the loans for construction. people are going to have a huge surprise coming if this passes. maybe not right away, but a couple years out. they are not going to be happy and there wont be a damn thing we can do about it.

There are a lot of people saying "Vote No" to the levy because of open enrollment; but here is the bottom line:

Property values go down if the school system declines even marginally. For instance, if they cancel the football program, your property values fall. So the person that said 'If it passes, you will see a For Sale sign in front of my house', well if it passes, you might just get a decent price for the house...if the levy doesn't pass, you might as well kiss whatever price you thought your property was worth goodbye.

This is a 4.9 mil levy that incorportes a huge portion of the funds being provided by the government stimulus. If it does not pass, you will end up having to pass a 6.5 mil levy just to do the repairs on Briar and Furry. Those schools are in very serious need of upkeep and repair and many of Briar's classes are already in trailers. None of the 6.5 mil levy will be supplemented by the government. So take 40 million in stimulus to match our contributions, or deny the levy and pay more next year, but receive NO government assistance and get a patch job on the problem.

The government stimulus package ends in 2010, so if you don't do it now you pay more out of your pocket later to try and maintain 2 of 4 schools that should have been leveled years ago.

Perkins is already one of the lowest tax districts in the area and will remain that way even when this levy passes.

As for the open enrollment aspect, only 153 of 664 school districts in Ohio do not allow open enrollment. By next school year, over half of those will be joining the open enrollment ranks, it is just the way things are. Too much of a school district's funding comes on a 'per head' basis, and the more kids you have enrolled, the more money your district has to spend on teachers, sports, etc.

Lastly, I'd like to point out that this is a comment section, not a blog. A blog is your personal thoughts on a site governed by you, comments here are no different than when you make a comment to a co-worker over coffee.

I have taken the time to read all the comments on this blog , and i have to say that most of the comments that are made on here are very good and should be reread by all .

But I have to say is one thing , and by the grace of god , I have no children in the school system and am glad of that

I can remember when i went to school some thirty odd years ago , you never had half of the problems that schools have to face now , The worse thing when I went to school was smoking , but not on school grounds . and no I am not saying it was right, but stil if they had the problems that they had back then , they wouldnt need the police to be at every school .Its a shame , not to mention I am sure that the school could teach a lot better if not for the problems of today .

Thats why I would think that all of the parents should think about home schooling , and that way the parents couldnt take and lay the blame on someone else .NOT TO MENTION THE PARENTS WOULD HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIABLITY FOR THERE CHILDREN .BUT IS APPARENT THAT THE PARENTS REALLY DONT WANT TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE KIDS SO THEY SEND THEM TO SCHOOL JUST TO GET THEM OUT OF THERE HAIR FOR A FEW HOURS A DAY .

If you dont like the way the system is , get your butts off the net and get active in your childs education.dont wait tilL something happens and then hide behind your key boards and place the blame on the schools

Its as plaIn as I can put it , now I know that a lot of you out here dont have a good education and cant teach your kids the basics , and if you cant , then learn , Take an intrest in your children before they cause problems and respond in a calm matter with not only your children , but the schools as well

As they once told me you can catch a lot of bees with honey then you can with water

Please take a better intrest in whats going on at your school , stop in and vist once in while and ask questions , and when you have what you need , sit down and deal with the problems so it dont accure again , and most of all , if you tell the teachers as well as your child you are going to do something , then do it,

And one other thing , If your child does something wrong , then take the action needed , but at the same token give the childor chilren credit for something they did right .and like i said take an intrest in your child , you are the ones that gave them life and its up to all of us to mmake sure that they are ready to meet todays challanges of tomorrow , after all they are our tomorrow .

SabrinaLei says: If you must know ‘text language’ is rapidly taking over. Languages evolve not always for the better but still.

You have just witnessed your hard earned tax dollars at work, folks. Basically the dumbing down of society, too lazy to spell a word in it's entirety. Years of education just thrown out the window, without a care. In this same blog we have a 13 year old that sounded out the word, associate, and thought the best spelling would be 'occoate'. This is all very disturbing to say the least.

I challenge these young ladies, to fill out a job application in 'text language' and see what happens. Better yet a college application and see if the college agrees that is the way the"language has evolved".

As much as I would like to use this as an excuse not to vote for the levy, my first thought in reading this, is that these children are a direct result of a lack of proper upbringing and lack of good parenting. You can not blame the schools for these 13 year olds disrespect for adults and nasty mouths. (Half of their blogs have been deleted) The school is not allowing these children to "date", the parents are. This so called bullying all supposedly occurred because one of the girls is dating the ex of the other. That is not a school problem, that is a parent who has no rules,no standards, no morals, or no idea what their child is up to.

For the record, I raised three children, I didn't hand that over to the school system to do for me. They were not allowed to date, until they were 16.  All three went to college, and all three text me daily, using proper english and grammer and have never used "text language". It all starts in the home.

Look at the situation with Mentor Schools.   They have a zero tolerance policy re: bullying.  They have a lot of fluffy anti-bullying programs.   Yet, bullying was so rampant at that school that 4 kids in 4 years committed suicide.  The family members of those kids say that each one of the kids was torturously taunted and physically assauted at school.  Family members also say that they had repeatedly gone to the schools for assistance to no avail.  This is not just a problem in Perkins Schools.   This is a problem every where and Perkins is no different.

Previously, inadequate parenting in some households could be mitigated some by adequate supervision, consistent enforcement of rules, and meaningful consequences in schools.   No doubt that extremely poor parenting is contributing to the problems in schools, but allowing middle school children who are known for their impulsivity, poor judgement, and poor problem-solving skills access to instant messenger during the school day and texting during the school day may be exacerbating the problem.

Actually, having computers at the school is no different than having a cell phone with text messaging provided by the PARENT.  Quit trying to pass the buck.  PARENTING is the problem.  The fact that this parent is allowing her child to attack others on an internet blog while giving her name away at age 13 is one small example.  The kids will find a way.  Maybe the parents shouldn't give their kids cell phones.  Students go into the bathroom between classes or ask to use the restroom during classes and use their phones to either get online or text others.  Are teachers supposed to go into the bathroom with them?  Really?   Oh, I've got an idea, how about the kids aren't allowed to use the restroom during the day.  That way, they can be supervised the whole time.  Get real.  Teachers are with students 50 minutes a day, 183 days of the year.  Where are they the rest of the time?  With the parents.  Who should be responsible?  THE PARENTS.  Instill some good morals into your child, and they won't bully or bring knives to school. If they make a mistake, it will be once, because they will have the ability to learn from mistakes when they are young.

Lack of parenting at home and lack of adult supervision in other places like school.  There is no good reason for a child to be so unsupervised at school that they are able to  instant message threats to another student on a school computer or so unsupervised at school that they are able to comment on a blog during the school day.  Absolutely unacceptable.

Of course Sandusky is going to have more problems than area schools, because Sandusky is an inner city school. It is only a matter of time before the state comes in and says merge. The financial situation of public school funding is going in that direction. I say within 10 years or so.

I have two kids that goto Perkins and there is a HUGE difference between Sandusky High and Perkins HS or at least there was before open enrollment!!!  EVERY school is going to have "cliques", jocks, druggies, partiers, mean girls, nerds, the difference is the values in which these kids are taught, or I should say LACK of values.  Im not saying that there are no Sandusky parents that care nor will I say ALL Perkins parents do care, but all you have to do is take a ride through Sandusky just after a SHS football game, or ANY SHS event.....there are groups of kids walking the streets, fighting, taunting passer byers...being disruptive......EVERY TIME!!!!  That just doesnt happen AS OFTEN in Huron or Perkins or Margaretta.  There are bad kids EVERYWHERE, but they are only bad because the parents have failed, them not the system.  SOME parents in Sandusky think there kids can do NO wrong and when they do, it must be the schools fault or the police or who knows...Santa Clause....they pin blame on everyone except themselves.  You could not pay me to send my kids to SHS and now that Perkins has open enrollment, St. Marys is looking real good to me.  I dont blame any Perkins parents for being upset...as for the actual point of this story with the bullying...this happens in every school and has for years and years, bringing a weapon to school to handle it, is NEVER the right option.  I feel bad for this girl, because somehow she felt this is the only way she could handle the situation....

there are far too many posts on here that should be deleted for containing personal attacks.. the only issue that is sensible to debate here is safety in schools.. because we are not the investigators so we cannot make definitive statements about any of the parties involved.. so i feel like overall safety in schools should be the primary issue.. comments like "this is an example of why we need.... " type of comments.... and segragating perkins district from sandusky district is retarded.. that paints an entire district with a broad stroke and looks like something similar to racism..

i'm gonna have to agree that the whole grammar thing and perkins vs sandusky is irrelevant and makes anyone who mentions it look a fool to someone like me..

I’ll have you know that I am from Sandusky and have many friends who are also, but i have been open enrollment for over a year now. Both schools have the same problems the real difference is that any in Sandusky are sensationalized. Besides most of you people don’t have a clue what the situation was and as I was there I can tell you most of the situations are false. There was no bulling, the girl that brought the knife is well known all over Perkins and Sandusky for saying and blaming anyone to try to save her own skin. This is by far not the first time. Last but it wont be least, why are all these people attacking Amber for her spelling when it isn’t the issue. If you must know ‘text language’ is rapidly taking over. In loco parentis

Latin for "in place of a parent." A person or institution that assumes parental rights and duties for a minor.

There was a time when a teacher would call home to discuss an issue with parents, and the parents would take the teacher's comments and concerns at face value.  Parents would take the behavior of their children personally.  A child's behavior was a direct reflection of themselves.  If the child poorly represented the parent in any way, the child would be dealt with by the parent.

I would argue that a return to this way of thinking would greatly reduce the incedence of poor behavior of children in the schools.  Parents are too quick to take their child's word for it BEFORE that of trained professionals.  When a parent takes the word of their child over that of a trained professional, they are in fact exacerbating the bullying problem.  It is irresponsible to insist that your child's story is the only story to believe in not recognizing that there are two sides to every story, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Well,we have now seen a perfect example of what kids act like when their parents have their head in the sand. Ever hear that comment "Perception is reality"? Well, that means if you act like an idiot, you will be perceived like one, so if you want to be perceived as a girl who is smart, intelligent and a victim in a bad situation, don't go in public acting like you have on this blog.

Also, you have just seen what happens when a parent refuses to make their child behave and act intelligently. No child will hold themselves accountable for their actions, if the parents refuse to hold the child responsible for their actions nor themselves in the parenting role.

Bullying is a bad thing, but it's nothing more than the same thing we have just witnessed. Parents who refuse to be parents and refuse to punish their kids, or hold them accountable. This cycle won't stop unless the parents step up and make it stop.

It's a public forum. The article caught peoples attention and your insistance on responding to every comment you do not agree with is only fanning the flames. Every person on here has the right to post their opinion whether you like it or not, and also whether you agree with it or not. It's your choice to read the comments and respond. I do not agree with taking weapons of any kind to school, but you keep defending your side of the story. It's not going to change the fact that no matter how thin you pour the pancake, it still has two sides. It's human nature to be curious and the Register feeds on that. As a former employee of a different newspaper I can tell you that good news doesn't sell papers, bad and sensationalized news does. You're just feeding into the frenzy. If and when the Register prints the other girl's side of the story there's going to be a whole lot more people wanting to put in their two cents. You can't stop it, so try turning off your computer and study your English and Social Studies homework instead. English so you can learn to speak effectively (text speak is fine if you're texting, not on a public forum) and Social Studies so you can better understand human nature. If you want to be treated like a mature young adult, you first need to act like one. I tell my children all the time, if you don't like what people call you - prove them wrong. If you keep proving them right then you're only helping them.
