Sandusky Mall gets $1M renovation
Sep 08
2010
The newest attraction at Sandusky Mall isn’t a trendy fashion store or tasty snack cart — it's carpeting.
Planners behind Sandusky Mall are placing 60,000 square feet of industrial, heavy-duty carpet and 14,000 square feet of Italian porcelain tile along the walkway as part of a $1 million renovation funded by the Cafaro Company.
It's all in an effort to improve the mall environment for customers, offering them greater service and pleasure, mall planners said.
Here's a rundown on the mall renovations that will be completed by Nov. 1:
• 60,000 square feet of industrial, heavy-duty carpet, largely in the main concourse
• 14,000 square feet of Italian porcelain tile at entry points
• Chandeliers
• New air conditioning and heating
• Remodeling exteriors at JCPenney, Macy’s and Sears
• Electronic marquee on U.S. 250 displaying movie titles and times
• Monument signs at entry points to guide visitors toward department stores and key areas
• Landscaping improvements.
• NOTE: The new Cinemark theater is not part of the $1 million renovation

I was at the mall today and spoke with one of the women who are charged with keeping the carpet clean. They are not thrilled, my opinion, because of the difficulty in keeping carpeting clean. It requires a vacuum cleaner and spills generally leave stains. Have we forgotten the nastiness of chewing gum that gets ground into carpeting? Yuk.
Nothing beats a shiny, waxed and squeeky clean floor. Carpeting is unsanitary and one might as well live in a sweeper bag considering the dust that remains in the fibers.

Bring back Gold Mine with the classic arcade games. Cedar Point Gifts. Baskin Robbins...Oh wait, not Baskin Robbins...all the slobs will get ice cream all over the new carpet.
Bring Back York Steak House too...and Angelo's-and maybe stop charging insane monthly rent payments. How about an Apple Computer store? Closest is Cleveland.

Compared with other malls the same age, Sandusky Mall is doing quite well. The owners have done an excellent job of keeping it full and up to date.

Carpet? Tile? Chandeliers? Whatever. I'm sure they look very nice (although I agree with most here that the carpet isn't going to stay that way). But if you want me to go shopping at the mall, the BEST renovation you could make is to get some better stores in there. By "better," I mean more variety and more range.
The bigger places -- Penney's, Sears, Macy's, Elder Beerman -- are fine and do offer a pretty good variety. And the book store is pretty much the best thing ever (at least for someone like me who's an avid reader). But there are all sorts of places I've not so much as set foot in due to a complete lack of interest. Why not one of those world import places (Pier I has gotten ridiculously expensive and could use some competition)? A Discovery store? Come up with some things I can't get elsewhere unless I'm willing to drive to South Park!
Meanwhile, I'll probably continue to go to Border's using the store entrance and, when I'm done shopping, turn right back around and go elsewhere for anything else. The carpeting's just not that much of a lure. Sorry.

There Doofus Smith goes with the "you people" again. It's gonna stink! Restaurants hardly use carpet at all any more because it's disgusting. Ever been to PondeGROSa on Milan Rd when it was still open? Your feet actually stuck to the carpet it was so nasty. I would never put carpeting in my kitchen! Those mall floors need mopped-not vacuumed...again..."duh" ...and the "take your shoes off" idea? Ewwwwwwwww! Let's all get athlete's foot while we're at it, especially with sandal wearers running around barefoot. Ewwwwwwww.

I was at the mall last week and hated the carpet for the fact it's HARD to push my double stoller around! It did look nice though.

Forget the carpet. Forget the Italian tile.
If you want to bring back the sexy to the Sandusky Mall get on the horn with Montgomery and FW and convince them to bring their irresistible wares back to Erie County. If you can convince FW to open up the lunch counter again, well that would just be the icing on the cake.
Call Scotto and get his pizza-by-the-slice revolution back. Restore the glory of the Gold Mine. Hickory Farms on Line 1.
Close Borders and bring back Gray Drugs, then move on down the line and convince Recordland to come back to relive the golden days of vinyl.
Get rid of that sporting goods hack, "Dick" and restore the wonder that was Koenig's.
And finally, one word: Silvermans.
Now THAT would restore the luster of the Sandusky Mall.

Don’t worry Taxpayer – we are taking our real shopping elsewhere. I do not know if you have ever led a successful business, with your attitude that would be impossible. It is about us. In fact, because this is a privately owned business, who happens to be in the business of serving people, it would be wise to ask their clients if they wished to have new carpeting – or a new atmosphere (décor), or anything else that might actually attract local business. With people coming in and out of the mall, it would have been fairly easy to conduct a qualitative or quantitative survey. Especially if a business is privately owned, they should want to know what the needs and wants of their consumers are.

I'm curious as to what all the "mall walkers" think of walking fast on the carpeting as opposed to doing their daily walk on the tile floor. Also, why are so many of you worried about the upkeep of the carpet? Won't a dirty carpet mean "more jobs" for carpet cleaners? I thought "more jobs" is what everyone wants and whines about here in Erie County. Seriously people, if you are so worried about carpeting in the mall, you need to get a life.09:53 AM

The liberal? The flaming liberal.
So is this TAXPAYER money being spent? NO! This is a private business who decided to spend their OWN money to try to improve things. If you do NOT like it, go shopping someplace else. Decades ago I thought the Mall would fold up. Stores have come and gone. But, guess what sports fans. It is STILL there and people STILL shop there. In fact, at least four generations have shopped there. It is all about what a business decides to do, not what YOU want. If YOU want to make expensive decisions and proclaim how wonderful YOU are then look into your OWN finances. Oops, members of the "freeloaders club" are exempt. Ha! Ha!

Sandusky Mall has NO good stores for shopping. We go to Franklin Park Mall usually. Especially for kids clothes. Sandusky Mall has no kids clothes specialty stores. Where is Gymboree? The Childrens Place? Baby/Kids Gap? Crazy 8? Justice? Limited Too? The only place to shop for little kids clothes in Sandusky Mall is Penneys, Sears, Elderbeerman, and Macy's. Not much selection in those stores either!
Plus there is not much selection with food choices. I'd love to see Sandusky Mall expand and put in several food courts. Sure they have what 3 sit down places and a few pretzel/cookie places but a real food court offering fast food etc. Teens have no place to hang out at our Mall and socialize.

You're right on the money, Brutus. By the way, the carpeting has been used in many other malls and holds up beautifully. I just wanted to add one small clarification to Andy's story. The renovation project will cost IN EXCESS of $1 Million. (We don't discuss the precise cost for proprietary reasons.)

You people against the carpet need to get out in the world once in awhile. Geesh. Heavy duty commercial carpet. What part of that don't you get? Maybe they should have put in dirt floors so you would feel more at home.

I guess I am just trying to figure out why they would have even thought of this idea. Working with senior citizens, I can see someone who "shuffles" their feet or uses a cane, having difficulty walking on this stuff. And I agree about the problem of upkeep, especially with winter coming. And it's not just about wet shoes. It's also the wet tires on wheelchairs, etc. WHAT WERE THEY THNKING??

I have been there since they started this project. I cant believe you would put carpet in a high traffic area. And to top it off it s a light color. I am all for any improvements but wow what a waste of money.

I wish they would make the whole mall like Old Town that was part of the Southwick Mall in Toledo back in the late 70's and early 80's. Paint the ceilings black and put in old street lamps and park benches, and make every store front fit the image. Have the lighting kind of be on the dark side so it's like evening and night time. Also, I'd like to see more food-dah, and have it mixed in among the stores, and not have a food court-I hate food courts!. And I'd like to see a wing of the mall dedicated to very small, specific shops owned by local people. That's been done here before, but it didn't last. It might work in the mall, though. My favorite store in Old Town was the poster shop. They had every poster you could ever want, since that's all they sold!
Our mall will never be able to compete with other malls unless it sets itself apart in some way, giving people a unique experience that they can't get anywhere else, something worth coming here for.

Carpet in the mall is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard. Although, it is nice but it will not look nice for long and causes more maintenance issues and cost more to maintain. A year from now, they will be ripping it back up. Watch out store renters, your rent is about to go up and that will be passed onto the consumer in the product they sell.
