 Joan K. Ziss, 63, of Sandusky, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, in Lakewood Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

She was born June 22, 1946, in Toledo daughter of the late Lois (Canfield) and Joseph R. Rode. She was a 1964 graduate of Perkins High School. Joan received her bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University in 1968 and her master's degree from the University of Toledo in 1990. Joan retired from the Erie-Huron-Ottawa Education Service Center, teaching special education; was formerly a teacher for Sandusky City Schools; and was the former Administrator of Kiddie College Pre-School at St. Stephen United Church of Christ.

She was a member of St. Stephen United Church of Christ, where she was a Deacon and a member of Church Council, organizer of vacation Bible school, and was a former member of the Board of Christian Education. She was also a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Sandusky College Women's Club, Down-to-Earth Garden Club, Quilt Club and was an active member of the Sandusky Sailing Club. She was a 4-H advisor and Boy Scout and Girl Scout advisor.

Joan enjoyed gardening, reading, going to estate sales, making wool appliqué sewing projects, trips to Holmes County, collecting pottery and spending time with her three grandsons.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years (June 20, 1970), James C. Ziss; her daughter, Rebecca E. (Leroy) Lentz of Sandusky; two sons, Andrew J. (Lisa N.) Ziss of Toledo and Erich C. Ziss of Norwalk; three grandsons, Liam T. Maiher, Alec L. Lentz and Nicholas J. Lentz; and her brother, Fred (Linda) Rode of Marion, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, and from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until services at 10:30 a.m. in St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Jerald Fenske will officiate. Burial will be in Webster Township Cemetery in Scotch Ridge, Ohio.
