Charlotte May Hawkins, 83, of Sandusky, loving wife and mother, went home to be with her Lord April 15, 2010. She died at home after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family and the compassionate care of Hospice.
Charlotte was born Aug. 20, 1926, in East Hampton, N.Y. She lived in Baldwin, N.Y., for 15 years and moved to Shelter Island, N.Y., where she married Robert on May 17, 1947. After Bob graduated from college they lived in Edison, N.J., for 15 years. While in New Jersey, Charlotte was a member of Stelton Baptist Church where she served as youth leader, junior and teen choir pianist, librarian, editor of the church news and was on the Board of Christian Education and Missionary Committee. She was a Bluebird/Camp Fire Girl leader who will be remembered for writing, directing, staging and costuming many musical shows. Charlotte also enjoyed reading, sewing and gardening and most of all being a wife, mother, and caretaker for her invalid mother.
In 1967 the family was transferred to Sandusky. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served as youth leader, college and career leader, Teen and Senior Choir Director, librarian, and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. Charlotte's life centered around her faith in God and her family. She left a legacy of unselfish giving and caring.
Charlotte is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Robert E. Hawkins; three daughters, Peggy (Chuck) McKenna of Norwalk, Marilyn Boniol of Nashville and Nancy (Craig) Firestone of Wooster, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Christie and Robbie (Brittany) McKenna, Cynthia and Mark Boniol, and Justin, Joshua and Nathan Firestone.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her mother and father, Alma and Fredrick Winberg; and her brother, 2nd Lt. Robert Winberg.
Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Sunday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church, 1810 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky; Pastor David Hixson will officiate. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Cemetery.
