SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.
David C. Smith, 87, of Southern Pines, N.C., died at 5:12 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C.
David was born Jan. 5, 1923, in East St. Louis, Ill., son of the late Stephen C. and Marie (McKinney) Smith. He married Dorothy Arlene (Lather), June 7, 1947, in First English Lutheran Church in Tiffin; she survives.
Survivors include his children, Michael David (Margaret Jackson) Smith of Columbus, Jeffrey Stephen (Rebecca Smith) Smith of New London, N.C., and Maureen Smith (Andrew John) Meeker of Avon Lake. David is also survived by his sister, Joan (Art) Williams of Osh Kosh, Wisc.; and seven grandchildren, Erika Leigh Smith, Kelly Elizabeth Smith, Kristin Danielle Smith, David James Smith, Stephen Jeffrey Smith, Amanda Marie Meeker and Andrew John Meeker Jr.
David worked 34 years with Ohio Bell Telephone, AT&T, Southern Bell, as a commercial manager. He introduced Findlay, Ohio, to Touch Tone Telephone to the nation, and in Sandusky he introduced 911 to the nation. He served three years as director of United Way, was a member of Rotary International, president of Kiwanis, president of the YMCA, president of Resurrection Lutheran Church, and a member of Plum Brook Country Club and Midland Country Club. David also was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving three years in U.S. Fifteenth Air Force as a navigator on a B-24 bomber in Europe during World War II. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1941 and later went on to graduate from Wittenberg University in 1948.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenlawn Cemetery with Pastor Paul Stengel officiating. The Engle-Shook Funeral Home in Tiffin is assisting the family with their arrangements.
