Earl W. Cheek, 85, of Sandusky passed away early Thursday evening, March 25, 2010, in Ohio Veterans Home following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Wheelersburg, Ohio, son of the late Essie and Dora (Wiseman) Cheek. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1982 after 28 years of service.
Earl was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sandusky and a former member of Sandusky VFW post 2529. He enjoyed following the Cleveland sports teams and Ohio State Buckeyes, fishing and puttering around the yard.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce (Galloway) Cheek; four sons, William (Cheryl) of Iowa, Timothy (Julie) of Sandusky, Stephen (Krista) of Castalia and Patrick (Scarlett) of Florida; three daughters, Barbara (Danny) Ouellette of Castalia, Jacquelyn (William) Jesberger and Sandra Ramon, both of Sandusky; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald (Dorothy) of Monroeville and Joseph (Carolyn) of Sandusky; three sisters, Anna Pooch of Florida, Ruth Cheek of Sandusky and Virginia (Ray) Odenweller of Catawba Island; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, William, George, Howard and Carl; and two sisters, Katie Foster and Lucille Krutil.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Sunday in Groff Funeral, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home; the Rev. Philip Gardner will officiate. Entombment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park Huron.
