Jack Delbert Ross, 80, of Sandusky died late Wednesday evening, March 25, 2010, in Stein Hospice Care Center following a brief illness.
He was born March 6, 1930, in Fremont, son of the late George W. and Phronia D. (Campbell) Ross; he moved to Sandusky as a child. Jack graduated from Sandusky High School in 1948, and in 1949 married his childhood sweetheart, Morene Feltner. Jack proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a forward observer, earning the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and the coveted Combat Infantryman's Badge, as well as other awards for meritorious service. Jack spent many years working in the metal casting industry, spending the last 18 years of his career as foundry supervisor. He was a member of First Faith Community Church in Sandusky, and a lifetime member of Sandusky VFW Post 2529. Jack enjoyed watching baseball, football and golf, going to garage sales, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Shirley (Frook-Dietrich) Ross; daughter, Kelly of Sandusky; stepdaughter, Vicki (Michael) Holliday of Sandusky; stepsons, Joseph (Charmaine) Dietrich of Mishawaka, Ind., Michael (Robert Kanz) of Columbus and Patrick (Diane) Dietrich of Sandusky; stepgrandchildren, Anthony (Wendy) McKillips, Daniel (Kim Brennan) McKillips, Elizabeth Weyer, Andre (Aubrey Mills) Dietrich, Kelli (James Greenham) Dietrich and Rachelle Dietrich; two sisters, Joyce Eversole of Sandusky and Joann Gruver of Fremont; brother, George D. (Reba) Ross of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Morene, in 1986; and brother, James (Wanda) Ross.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Saturday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Faith Community Church, 225 E. Jefferson St., Sandusky; Pastor Eric Rickel will officiate.
