Elsie Marie Arnold, 89, Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord March 20, 2010, surrounded by her family in Providence Care Center.
She was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Oberlin, Ohio, daughter of the late Joseph Randle and Mary Frances (Hatter) Quinn. She received a certificate of honor from Sandusky High School in 1941 for passing the Junior Typing Test. She graduated from Oberlin High School in 1942, and received a diploma from Sandusky Business College in June 1962. Elsie was employed at New York Central Railroad during the war. She also worked at Brownlee's Tavern, Erie Ordnance Depot in Port Clinton, and retired from Vulcan Materials in 1982 after 43 years of service.
She was united in marriage to Arthur Poole of New London and later to Carl N. Arnold of Sandusky.
Elsie attended Rust United Methodist Church in Oberlin; after moving to Sandusky, she joined St. Stephen A.M.E. Church, where she was a member for 65 years. She was the president of the senior choir for 60 years, served as secretary and chairperson for the lay organization and Daisy Burns Missionary Society, chairperson pro-tem for the finance committee and chairperson of the homecoming committee.
She received the Distinguished Service Award from North Ohio AME Lay Organization in 1984, and The Most Valuable Player Award and Distinguished Service Award from St. Stephen AME Church. She was a faithful, dedicated and dependable member of the church.
She enjoyed yard work, gardening, reading, basketball, cookouts for the family, and the church.
Elsie leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Charlotte M. Poole Randleman Farris and The Rev. Doris C. Poole Warren Troup, both of Sandusky; grandchildren, John Anthony (Claudine) Randleman of Las Vegas, Mark Anthony (Mary Denise) Warren of Cleveland, Terrance Lynn Randleman of Dayton, Andre' Denise (Shad Mayfield) Warren and Tracia D. (Paul) Brown, both of Sandusky, Stacey S. Warren of Washington, D.C., and Tonya L. (Michael Brown) Randleman, Von S. (Penny) Randleman, Vincent L. Randleman, Brett A. Farris and Wendy V. Warren, all of Sandusky; 24 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Josephine Weatherspoon of Pahrump, Nev., and Thelma C. Smith of Oberlin; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a special aunt, Miss Susie Quinn; brother, William W. Quinn; and sisters, Beulah A. Williams and Ruby M. Caldwell.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Friday in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Homegoing Celebration will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Stephen AME Church, 312 Neil St., Sandusky; Pastor Emeritus, the Rev. Thomas E. Darden will officiate with the Rev. Paul Bupe delivering the eulogy. Internment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park.
