Gregory J. "Greg" Gerhart, 81, of Sandusky, passed away late Sunday afternoon, March 21, 2010, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 3, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, son of the late Joseph John and Jane Marie (Darby) Gerhart. Greg was a 1947 graduate of St. Mary High School and Tri-State University in Angola, Ind., with a degree in electrical engineering. Greg was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1954-56, in the Signal Corps. He retired in 1990 as President of Sandusky Electric after nearly 30 years.
Greg was the 1940 Sandusky Marble Champ (held at Cedar Point), Panther football and basketball athlete and remained a Panther supporter throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling and golfing, and most of all, the annual family vacations.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic War Veterans, Knights of Columbus-4th Degree Bishop Machebeuf General Assembly 813, Past Faithful Navigator, Rotary Club-Past Paul Harris Fellowship and director for a year, and a volunteer at the Senior Center, Firelands Regional Medical Center, and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Virginia L. (Ernst) Gerhart, who he married June 27, 1953; children, Julie (Gary) Ferber of Sandusky, Ellen (Jim) Schumacher of Naperville, Ill., Kathleen (Scott) Fisher of Hilliard, Ohio, Patricia (Jeff) Volz of Huron, Edward G. Gerhart of Sandusky and James (Diana) Gerhart of Ashland, Ohio; 17 grandchildren, Dan, Kristin (Ian), Beth (Brian), Steve, Amy, Kevin, Mark, David, Eric, Brian, Sam, Lauren, Katie, Matthew, Nicole, Nathan and Jonathan; six sisters, Elizabeth (Victor) Smith of Sandusky, Kathleen Russell of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Mary (Donald) Roth of Norwalk, Jeannie (Paul) Roth of Cleveland, Joan (Eric) Magnuson of Fremont and Frances (Anthony) Hoffman of Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the Rosewood staff of Providence Care Center and Mike Martin, Greg's kind caregiver.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, with the rosary recited at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Jason Kahle and the Presentation of the Chalice at 8:30 p.m. by Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, Bishop Machebeuf General Assembly 813. Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Dave Nuss will officiate with co-celebrants the Rev. Tommy Rodrigues and the Rev. Bertrand Shenk. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Sandusky.
