Lorraine J. Holzapfel, 88, formerly of Sandusky and Huron, died Monday afternoon, March 15, 2010, following an automobile accident. She was a resident of the retirement community of Kendal at Oberlin since 2003.

Lorraine was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Sandusky, and was a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lorraine attended the University of Michigan, where she received both a B.A. and M.A., and The Pennsylvania State University, where she received a D.Ed.

She worked for Revere Copper and Brass in Rome, N.Y., and Baltimore and for Encyclopedia Brittanica in Chicago. She taught sixth grade in Glenn Ellyn, Ill. At The Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pa., she was assistant dean of students.

Locally she was active with the League of Women Voters and was a volunteer at Firelands Hospital gift shop. Lorraine served on the board of Firelands College of Bowling Green State University and on the board of Erie Metropolitan Housing Authority in Sandusky. She was active in First Presbyterian Church in Huron. She enjoyed sailing, cross-country skiing, traveling, tennis, bridge and reading.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Maureen) O'Hara of Redmond, Wash., and Stuart O'Hara of Norwalk; daughter, Margaret O'Hara of Chicago; two stepsons, Mark Holzapfel of Key West, Fla., and Eric (Susan) Holzapfel of Cincinnati; stepdaughter, Lynn (Robert) Lehrer of Mount Gillead, N.C.; sister, Patricia (James) Roller of Ashtabula; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Holzapfel, whom she married in 1973. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, George Stuart O'Hara of Sandusky, whom she married in 1948 and divorced in 1963.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, 225 Williams St., Huron. The Rev. David R. Aber will officiate.
