Sarah M. Jones, 86, of Mansfield died early Saturday morning, March 13, 2010, in Western Reserve Hospice House in Cleveland, after an extended illness.
She was born May 17, 1923, in Allerton, Ala. Sarah was a dedicated employee of Mansfield General Hospital for more than 40 years, where she was recognized for numerous awards of service and dedication, including recognition as the first African-American working in Surgical Operating Divisions of the facility.
She enjoyed traveling, reading, music and needlepoint, and was a long-standing member of Mitchell Chapel AME Church, where she sang in the choir during her younger days.
She is survived by her children, Deborah (Franklin) North of Sandusky and John Jones of Cleveland; granddaughter, Jillian Jones of Cleveland; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jones; parents; brothers, Edward "E.J." Grace, John Grace and Arthur Grace; and other relatives.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. Saturday until funeral services at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 315 Decatur St., Sandusky. The Rev. Herman Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
