Kathryn "Kay" Kraus, 103, of Sandusky died early Monday, March 8, 2010, in Stein Hospice Care Center.
She was born Jan. 17, 1907, in Port Clinton, daughter of the late Louis and Nettie (Schmitt) Kuhnle. She was a 1924 graduate of Vermilion High School and was a 1926 graduate of Sandusky Business College. Kathryn began her career as a private secretary for Lake Shore Electric Railroad, working for Mr. Burge for six years. She then ran the restaurant at the Murschel House Hotel for more than 30 years until her retirement in 1956.
She was a member of Pythian Sisters and Sandusky Garden Club, and was founder and president of Erie County Girl Scouts in the early 1940s. She loved playing cards and belonged to a bridge cub, canasta club and pinochle club.
Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Karol S. Barone of Sandusky; her son, Russell F. Kraus Jr. of Sandusky; four grandchildren, John R. Barone of Sandusky, Kathryn A. (Donald) O'Flaherty of Milan, Valerie J. (Michael) Parritt of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Kevin M. Kraus of Pittsburgh; five great-grandchildren, Kristen Barone of Bowling Green, Ohio, Erin Barone of Sandusky, Kelsey O'Flaherty of Milan and Michael Parritt and Kassie Parritt of Perrysburg; two stepgrandchildren, Kelly (Jesse) Teynor and Lee O'Flaherty of Nevada, Ohio; and one great-great-grandchild, Rielly Mae Teynor of Nevada.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell F. Kraus on Oct. 24, 1986; her parents; son-in-law, Joseph Barone; and her brothers, Orson and Louis Kuhnle.
Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Family funeral services will be private. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
