Wayne Carl Fairfield, 90, of Sandusky, died Monday morning, Feb. 19, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Sandusky. He was a 1934 graduate of St. Mary High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry. He was employed by New Departure Hyatt as a production control manager until retirement in 1980 after 33 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a life member of VFW Post 2529, an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus Bowling League. He was an avid golfer.
Mr. Fairfield is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Schemmer, whom he married May 29, 1948; three daughters, Mary Ann (Jeffrey) Davie and Linda Jean (James) Herzog, both of Sandusky, and Karen Sue (David) Albury of Westerville, Ohio; six grandchildren, Karin Davie, Thomas Davie, Tim (Melissa) Herzog, Brian Herzog, Mike (Kris) Herzog and Jen (Mike) Pothast; three great-grandchildren, A.J. and Jake Pothast and Annabelle Herzog; and a sister, Jane Knupke of Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry H. and Anna (Singer) Fairfield; two sisters, Catherine Fairfield and Bernice Kiser; and three brothers, Merle, Clyde and Glenn Fairfield.
Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where prayer services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Philip Feltman will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
