Eugene Eric Hessler, 81, of Sandusky, passed away Monday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2007, in his home, after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 1, 1925, in Sandusky. After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1943, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force as a sergeant, graduating from Gunner's School and serving overseas in World War II. Following his discharge, he served with the USAF Reserves, retiring as a Master Sergeant after 24 years in personnel and administration. His proudest moments and favorite stories involved his service to his country. He managed his family's plumbing business for a number of years, and then using his people skills and background, he became an outside salesman. He and his wife, Helen, co-owned and operated American Beauty Florist for 28 years.

Gene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 2529 and AMVETS Post 17. As a member of Elks Lodge 285, he served as secretary, district secretary and district lodge management chairman.

Gene is survived by his wife, Helen (Hurak) Hessler, whom he married Oct. 22, 1949; his son, Jeff "Java", who is without a doubt his father's son; his daughter, Deb (Bob) Miller; and his special buddy, Cabo. We will all miss "Geno" terribly. He is also survived by his nephew, Dale Kriss; and great-nieces, Melissa Keating, Brandy Wright and Marleana Kierpaul.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Sr. and Gladys (Buck) Hessler; grandparents, Mame and Charles Hessler; a sister, June Kriss; and nephew, Randy Kriss.
