Hugh J. Smith, 82, of Sandusky, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in Providence Care Center, Sandusky.
He was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Coeburn, Va., and was a resident of Sandusky since 1952. He graduated from Coeburn High School, Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tenn., and Roanoke Business College. He served as financial secretary and then president of the UAW Local 1216, Sandusky. He retired from Ford Motor Company, Sandusky, and the UAW Staff Council of International Representatives, Region 2B, in 1990. He was past president of the UAW Retirees Chapter of Toledo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was a longtime member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of Toledo; Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of Ohio, No. 26; Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, No. 72; Erie Commandery No. 23 Knights Templars of Sandusky; Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Science Lodge, Sandusky; Firelands Shrine Club; Zenobia Shriners, Toledo; American Legion Post 83 Sandusky; Fraternal Order of Eagles; and a member of First Baptist Church of Sandusky.
He is survived by his wife, Janice W. (Bledsoe) Smith to whom he was married for 55 years; a daughter, Elaine (Dan) Shupe of Milan; and grandchildren, Brian (Casi) Shupe of Sandusky and Andy Shupe of Toledo.
He was preceded in death by his son, H.J. Smith Jr. in 1986; parents, Finley and Hazel (Horne) Smith; and two sisters, and a brother.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. Wednesday until services 1 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main St., Huron. The Rev. Dan Miller of First Baptist Church, Sandusky, will officiate. A private family committal will take place at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
